Default Best Catamaran?

hey guys,

i'm new to this board.. however i've been doing some research on cats recently and i'd like yall to let me know which cat is the best in the 25+. i've looked (online) at twin vee, prokat, glacier bay, renaissance cats, sea cat, world cat, kelvakat, hawaii boats, hydrocats and mantaray cats. i've read many reviews on these boats but i think the best way to get the best review is from owners... not boat testers.

thanks guys
jonathan

Jonathan,
I am taking delivery of a new WorldCat 270TE this Saturday. I considered GB and World Cat. I liked both boats but opted for the World Cat. I like the higher power and look better.
The gb owners are going to recommend gb and the wc owners will recommend wc. Both owners will concede that both are great boats and that you need to test drive both yourself to make a decision. I do know that Powerboats.com preferred the World Cat Center Console over the Glacier Bay, however they favored the Glacier Bay Cuddy over the World Cat cuddy. Both evaluations were by a slim margin. Your decision will come down to personal preference.

Welcome and good luck J,

I'm with BM on this. Do the search here and on other sites. Plenty of info.

Boats are a lot like cars and women - the only way to find out which one is suited for you is to spend a little time with one doing a test drive, and you'll get a much better idea if you pick a windy day to test ride the boat.

Check out American Marine in Jax. Bill Sheffield makes a great cat. Try before you buy.

I have a Prowler 246 that unfortunately was run over by a 35 Cabo a couple months ago. It has been an absolutely fantastic boat. I spent two years looking at cats and that's the one I'm sticking with. If you want more info send me an email and I'll give my phone number and we can talk.

Default Best Catamaran?

I was on the 246 in Miami a few weeks ago. I liked the Prowler but was surprised at how low the gunnels were. I have spent enough time leaning over the side in rough water to know that I prefer a higher gunnel. It also put me off when they said they had a wait until Feb. 2004. I really like the efficiency and speed they seem to have. Seems like they are the best in these catagories. The wiring was really nice.

The other concern was a lack of a dealer network, they are only factory direct. I worried about resale with the market limited to South Florida. Don't quote me on this but I think they said they only have built 60 of them.

Also, the 246 on the factory web site with the yellow hardtop is sharp but the factory rep said that they really don't like to put hardtops on because of the weight. I got the feeling that this design does not handle weight as well as the semi-displacement and displacement hulls. Anyone have any thoughts on this.

I own a Prowler 246 and love it. The gunwale height has never been an issue for me due to the stability of the boat. They designed it for fishing based on boats like Contender and Seavee. I am a true fisherman and do a lot of catch and release and it would be difficult to do catch and release in other cats. Their open gunwale due to their 3 piece design gives you more stability than you would you think.

They are family owned and are semi-custom so they don't mass produce them. I liked that. They did tell me that they have increased in sales 50% over last year so I'm not worried about them.

By the way. The yellow boat does not have a hard top. That is their riggers boat who I know and fished with. The reason they don't like hard tops is cause of the weight and cost. Cats do not like weight.

Fishmatic,
You said 25+ so that probably means 26 or 27 ft. Last year I went thru your process and wound up with a 2860SC ProKat. I liked the 2660 but fell in love with the larger boat. I narrowed it down to WC and PK but at the time WC had had some owner issues which have been resolved. GB makes a great boat but we have so far to go on the Ga. coast I felt that the planning hull and more effeciency at higher speed was needed. I fish out of Shellman Bluff/ Sapelo Sound, an area you probably know well. I'm sold on cats. Both WC and PK are well suited for the kind of fishing and distances traveled off the Ga. coast. Both have good fuel capacity (240 gal+/-). I got my PK ftom a dealer in Buford Ga. He's sold a number of boats in the Savannah area. If you get hot on the PK, contact me thru this site. My boat is kept at Shellman. My dealer was Dream Marine. No I'm not a boat salesman, I just love my boat.
Luck with the decision.
It's hard to go wrong with a cat.

I water tested a Prowler 246 in Miami a few weeks ago also. I too was concerned about the low gunnel but sitting beam to sea in an out going tide with an east wind blowing left me convinced it is not an issue to me. I made an offer on a 26 WC a few months ago and I'm glad I didn't get it. The Prowler is easier to tow, has more storage and is more efficient. Can't wait until Feb. 04

Witchcratft:
I know you will like your boat. For me any cat is better than a mono hull, but my Prowler is great. Did you ride on their 306? I went on one before the show when they were test driving it. Now all I want is the 306. It was that good. If I had the cash I would get one. I didn't ride or look at the WC 33 yet but I can't imagine it being much better, but who knows. If I had the money I would check them both out, but as far as the 246 goes, I think you made a good choice.

Good luck.

HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RIDE ON ONE IN TRUE FISHING CONDITIONS.I LIVE JUST SOUTH OF SAVANNAH AND HAVE FISHED OUT OF SHELLMAN BUT I NORMALLY GO OUT KILKENNY MARINA. WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO BUY A RIDE WITH YOU SOMETIME AND SEE HOW THE BOAT DOES ON OUR HOME WATERS.

i rode on the 306 prowler and 330te worldcat the prowler rode great in a beam sea but in 4 footers going into them in came down so hard it hurt my spine. nice boat but i did not like the ride! To me it was a no contest between the wc and the prowler.

They all offer something to most people. I currently prfer the twinvee. I just don't like to do a lot of cleanup and waxing of liners. That said for the same price or maybe less you could get a 32 X 12 ft tv in multiple versions, just a thought for you

Worldcat270:
I rode in the 306 and it rode great all the way around. The day we went out was solid 4-6 and it took them like nothing. My 246 doesn't even pound in 4 footers.

Have not ridden on the other cats mentioned, have a 2800 Kevlacat and love the boat this is a walk around cuddy design with a large aft fishing area, so it will depend on if you are looking for a cuddy or center console model, I would take a look all cats and ride as many as you can and then make a choice, Happy boat hunting,Tim

hey guys,

well i'm just looking at boats right now ( 2nd year college so i don't have the $$ for boats =D).. its a dream of mine to fish offshore.. i've never been. anyways i'm sorry to hear about your misfortune latitude i hope you can get that worked out without too many issues. well joe (popl) how does your pk handle the water out in ga? i fish in wassaw sound and around savannah ( 16ft glassmaster with an 88hp evinrude) and i've seen some glacier bays drive by.. very nice ride in water that makes my boat act like a rocket after launch =D. anyway, well i've read many archives and articles on the different cats. the twin vee, gb, prokat and wc are at the top of my wish list.. how does the twin vee perform (ride and speed) against the above mentioned boats. i've never seen anyone on the water with at twin vee but i looked at their site and for the $$ there imo are the best value (length width cabin) i'm looking for a cabin type of boat.. that way if the weather picks up there is some shelter. but from what i've read.. the gb has the softest ride, the pk has the wave piercing hull (faster and pretty smooth) and the wc are the fastest of the 3.. but i've not heard much about twin vee in comparison to the others oh, i have also heard a rumor about gb going 30+ this summer and they are going to have another adventure except this time from texas to ny or something liek that up the coast... but i'm convinced that i do not want to invest in a monohull because i've seen and heard of the cats smooth ride. =D

thanks for your opinion guys and let me know what you think about this message

hey guys

i just remembered something else i read.. it seems that many owners say that their cats are underpowererd even though they are at the max recommended hp for the boat.. some people have added some more hp and are loving the preformance increase.. are most cats underpowered or should you only put the max hp on the vessel?

thanks jonathan
