Yesterday as I was shaking out pine needles I noticed a bass boat fishing my neighbor's dock. It was a Nitro 929 with a Verado on it. At first I assumed it must be a 150 due to the weight sensitivity of a bass boat but as he approached my dock I saw that it was clearly a 225. I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy but I continued to watch him not catch anything and one thing I was clearly impressed with is the attitude of the boat. I do not see 4 strokes on bass boats very much if at all. This boat's water line was in perfect shape as if any extra weight on the back did not matter. Once he packed it up and headed out I paid close attention to acceleration (bass boat guys are speed freaks) and boat balance. The boat handled like he had a 2 stroke on the back plus it was a heck of lot quieter than my Opti.
Here in the piedmont of NC the most popular motors on bass boats are (in no specific order) Optimax, VMax, ETECH. 4 strokes (any make) are certainly not the norm
Yes, different color and 25 less HP. It's just suprising to me to read so much about transom weight on this site and see bass boats that have to be more transom weight careful than most other boats (my opinion) carrying 4 strokes around like it's no problem.
What kinda speed are we talking with 250 horse on a bass boat? When we have tournaments around here some of these guys are teatering as they rocket across the lake. Must be some ride!
I know some are close to 80 and have heard of a few going over 80. Once owned an Intimidator Dale Earnhardt edition bass boat, believe it was a skeeter, that was suspose to be in the low 80's. Never even drove it, took it for a trade in on a car.

Who really knows, maybe the 80's? I've seen twin (yes twin) 250 Mercs on the back of bass boats at the Charlotte boat show. Speed on these boats is just a function of budget. Safety is not but this is not my concern. These guys seem to handle their hull and HP just fine otherwise we would hear more about them.

Took a ride in a bass boat on Lake George a few years ago. Hit 58 on the speedo and I was scared like a little baby - seemed like it wouldnt take much to get it air borne! Must have nerves of steel to do 80 in one of those things.

I spend a lot of time on Lake George and that will be my second trip of the year in May. Been going there since i was born and its still the most beautiful lake i have ever seen. The fishing is decent most of the time but even on a slow day.....who cares you are on Lake George. Most mornings the lake is dead calm like glass and you can go as fast as you want with any type of boat but that lake gets nasty too. Last october we were in 3-5's all weekend.
An allison bass boat (havent been onthat site in a while so i might not remeber exact speed numbers) with just a 150 on it does somethig like 80 mph. With a250 on it its overor near 100mph i think. Its a cat type bass boat super light good for flat water only.Cant imagine being in any chop with it.

Actually I want to say it was twin 300s and it was a couple years ago. I do not remember the manufacturer but the dealer is in Monroe, NC. Maybe Champion? Shouldn't be hard to find and call them up and verify. This boat was not sent to the dealer with twins, the dealer set it up with twins in their shop. It even had the Hot Foot gas pedal.
I think a Verado on a bass boat would be considered a cadillac. The nitro is a pretty heavy hull also. If you want speed, go with an allison or a bullet with a 300. I've been on a bullet going over 80 (not close to WOT) and I felt like the guy in the commercial that has his clothes ripped off to his buddies shagrin. I gave up bass boats a long time ago. The last one I had was a 409 Javelin with a 225 Vendicator on it. I put it up for sale the day after I lost it close to 80 and it set down rear end first and ejected my arse. I didn't hit nothing on the way out the back but skipped like a stone when I hit the water. After that I bought my first center console and never looked back.
If I was going to get another bass boat I would look at nothing but a rig like the one above. Quiet, best riding (imo) boat out there.
Last Friday I test drove a 18.6 ft triton bass boat with a 150 verado. The engine was sweet. Steering was super smooth and instant throttle response. Now for the bad news, the boat was hard to drive with the added weight on that hull. I have had several bass boats and this was the worse handling bass boat I have ever driven. Triton is suppose to handle well but it did not with the verado on the transom. The sales guy said perhaps the jack plate offset the weight to much Maybe a 20 fter could handle the extra weight bit not this 18.6. BTW, I was impressed with the verado itself. Sure would be sweet on a bay boat
There is a water ski show in Sarasota. They use sever different bass boats. One has tripple yes (3) Merc 150's and the other has twin 250's. Insane, but it pulls a bunch of skiers at once.

My guess is the boat you are talking about is a HydroDyne (now being made by Dyna-ski). Although it does look somewhat like a bass boat, it really is a boat designed specifically for show skiing, strapping 2 and 3 outboards on the back for the ability to pull up the big ski pyramids. I tried to find an image of the an older boat with the big motors, but here is one made by the new company:
actaully, check this ebay ad out, this is one of the older "dynes". I have seen the bigger model of this with twins on it. not really fast, plenty of power for pulling mulitple skiers, in its day. today the inboards have incredible pulling power. my '00 rig has a single 325HP Monsoon II in it, and can easily pull 3 barefooters from a deep water start (although difficult for it to maintain a good speed with any more than 1).
ok, last post, i promise (maybe you can tell i get a bit excited about ski boats): here is a newer "dyne" with 3 motors, along with an interesting shot of doing a tailwalk (assuming this is showing off at during a show:
