I believe it goes to your state. Also, when I looked into this I was told by ontario dealer than he would write boat/trailer on one invoice and outboard on another. He said I could get away with only paying sales tax in my state on the boat/trailer. I have not closed a deal yet, so verify this on your own and other states may vary as well. He said it is because you do not have to title or register an outboard in MI.

This is my understanding

You will have to pay Canada's GST @ 6% and Ontario's PST @ 7% (I think its 7%)

When you bring it into the USA you can then claim the money back.

HOWEVER, much easier way if to have the marina you are buying the boat from to have your boat delivered across the USA border. By doing that you will not have to pay either the GST or PST taxes . . . thus saving all the problems of reclaining the money etc.

MORE

If you are buying a second-hand boat from an individual (versus a marina) you do not pay either GST or PST

I had a custom boat built in Canada and delivered last September. I paid no Canadian taxes whatsoever.

You do not mention what boat, but if it is an outboard powered boat with Yamaha's, be aware that Yamaha Canada and Yamaha USA are technically two different companies and the warranty's are handled as such. Meaning if they are Canadian Yamaha's you will need to take the engine back to a Canadian dealer for warranty repairs.

Normal serviceect can be performed by anyone.

I agree . . . the important thing is to get it delivered . . . if you "receive" it in Canada you have to pay the taxes

Good luck

I live in Canada and have sold cars and boats to individuals and companies in the US. I did not charge any tax nor was I required to. This is the case regadless of whether you buy from an individual or a company in Canada.
PM me if you want my cell number and I would be glad to answer any questions on this subject.

One word of caution which my not apply to your situation. IF the boat was built in Canada you or a subsequent buyer can not use it for any charter operations in the US (Jones Act). The other comments about the GST and PST are correct.

SIM - Good comments on the engine warranty. I had not thought about that.

auguste is correct!
If the boat is new then have it delivered to the USA.
This is how we worked things out when our boat was built/delivered. We paid sales tax in our home state.

Andy, good point about warranty service. The dealer I spoke with (in detail) was in a border town, so they carried us and canadian versions of the outboards. Said they sold to michigan customers regularly.

Regarding the GST and PST. I cannot say for sure, but I was not informed of paying either of those, nor having to reclaim them. Perhaps because this was a border town? I dunno, doesn't seem like it should matter. Anyway, there was a form, number I don't know, 8-something, that dealer would fill out for me, said he would personally accompany me to the border, show them this form for customs I believe, and I would be on my way, and would pay my taxes when registered here in MI.

I still may buy a boat from this dealer, I'll ask next time I talk w/them.

BTW, this was for a U.S. made boat (hydra-sports).
