Default Optimax 225 spark plugs

According to my dealer, I will need to replace the spark plugs after approx a 20 hour break in period. Does anyone know the part # for the plugs needed for a 2005, 225 Optimax. I am waiting to receive my manual for the engine in the mail, and can't look it up. I see there are places to get plugs cheaper than $20.00 a piece. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have 220 hours on my original plugs and the motor is dealer serviced. Plugs have fallen in price (surprisingly) and now run $14-16 ea. I am changing them after the start up this spring and the winter oil is blown out because I slow troll a lot.

That's great, what are the parts #'s for the plugs, and where can I buy them without paying dealer costs.

WAIT!!! - your dealer is scamming you - if you don't belive me call merc and ask - actually an optimax does not have to be serviced until 100 hours, FOR ANYTHING.... - Call Mercury @ 920 929 5000, ask main operator for "consumer affairs" Must have serial # of engine handy...

and why are you waiting via mail for an owner's manual? While you got them on the phone ask them for the nearest MERCURY PREMIER SERVICE dealer and run there as fast as possible....

man, some dealers are crap....shame on Merc for this kinda stuff.....

Glenn hit the nail on the head.I took mine in at 120 hours they took a couple out and said they looked as good as new and put them back in.they use minimal oil so they last a good while

The owners manuals for the engine and Smart guages were lost I guess. They have them ordered for me. This is a 2005 left over and I guess things get misplaced??? My dealer is telling me that after 20 hours that the engine needs to come in for service ie: after break in. I am planning on doing my own maintenance any way. Not that hard to change lower unit oil or plugs. I am just trying to find the part # for the plugs.

That sound good to me. I wasn't planning on bringing it in for any service there except for any warranty things that I might need. I have been looking for the spark plug #'s to get a extra set to have on board. I guess I can always just pull 1 out and look. I went to spark plugs.com for NGK plugs and they don't list a 2005 225 optimax.

Meant to say smart guage manual. Anyway I found NGK plugs # IZFR5G for a 2006 225 Optimax, at sparkplugs.com. Can I use them in a 2005 model? I don't see any reason why not, just looking for more experienced advice.

You can get the smart gauge manual online. FWIW, I swapped out my plugs last year after the engine went into safety mode and nothing showed up on the computer readout. Boat ran great after that

Hey, why we are talkin (2005)225 optimax. I just hook up batteries and have power to everything(GPS radio, horn lights), except (hot) engine trim, engine gauges and starter. Does anyone know if there is a common fuse somewhere? I have wiring diagrams and looks as everything is common to ignition. Also trim on powerlever is not powered?
