I'm in a different league than most of you. I have a 50 hp e-tec. It replaced an old-style 2 stroke. No comparison! The new ones are quiet, no piston slap, hardly any smoke, starts right now and runs great. Very good on gas and oil. Mine trolls down to almost a stop and the transition between fast and slow is super smooth. Nice engines.

Yes, I would love to have a newer motor that doesn't smoke like a brush fire when first started for the Old Girl but, while it is still running I love the smell of a two stroke motor early in the morning on my way out for a day of crusing or fishing!
I'm with you on that. Plus, the cloud of smoke engulfing the boat keeps the mosquitoes/gnats/gulls away ... or kills them all. It also keeps tailgaters from following too close.

Couldn't agree more! I love the smell of hydrocarbons in the morning, but then I also drive a diesel truck.
Outboard exhaust is one of the smells of summer, like cut bait, salt water and sun tan oil. Brings back nothing but good memories, like when I was a kid fishing with my old man.
My Optimax isn't real bad on smell. I do smell it but nothing like my old Johnson.
At cruise you won't smell it all.
Now if you're trolling and you have the curtains and wings up the exhaust is going to find it's way into the cockpit and you will definitely smell it and you will smell like it.
Yep, couldn't agree more.......mosquitos.....no-seeums......at the dock.......no problemo, I just crank my Mercs and smoke em out Kinda cool that they sound like Harley's too . Then, when I have to fill the tank I wish they were newer technology
Let's make sure I understand. First "no oil in gas", then "a pressurized oil pump". All 2 stroke motors require oil mixed with the gas at some point in the cycle. The only difference between the old 2 strokes that required that the oil be mixed with the gas in the tank and the newer oil injected 2 strokes that mix the oil with the gas automatically is the method of mixing the oil with the gas. The gas that ultimately enters the combustion chamber on both new and old contains oil. Therefore both of them are burning a gas oil mixture. The reason the newer high tech 2 strokes don't smell as much is that the gas oil mixture is electronically regulated to optimize the mix. The older motors either injected the oil at a rate to cover worse case scenario or drew premixed gas and oil from the tank. Bottom line is, ALL TWO STROKE MOTORS BURN A MIXTURE OF GAS AND OIL.

Well.... If the level of oil in the oil tank keeps going down, and the motor is'nt leaking it, where do you propose it's all going
Since the new 2 stroke motors don't have a crank case full of oil and an oil pump that pumps oil through the crank shaft to lubricate the connecting rod bearings and the wrist pins and the main drive shaft bearings and then through the oil ring to lubricate the cylinder walls exactly how do you, in your infinite wisdom think all this takes place? I suggest if you really don't think that the fuel that the newer 2 strokes are burning is a mixture of gas and oil, then you need to take up bowling and leave the boating to the realists.
Better yet, if you have one of the newer 2 strokes, which obviously you don't, quit putting oil in the oil tank and see how long it takes the motor to puke.
It doesn't have a wet sump crank case, therefore it must be burning a mixture of gas and oil. If it wasn't you would never have to add oil. You would have to change the oil contained in some form of reservoir. The newer two strokes burn considerably less oil than the older motors, but they do burn a mixture of gas and oil. Do you ever have to change the oil in the Yamaha HPDI, or the Etec, or the Optimax? NO! Where do you think the oil you occasionally add to the tank is going? How about, out the exaust along with the other gasses of combustion.
Thank You Esox1- You would think wingnut8 would check his facts before he insists he knows! Actually wingnut8 I do own a new DFI 2 stroke! Of course no one would run the engine dry without oil! If you do a through internet search, you will find that some motorcycles and car engines also have a dry crankcase with a powerful oil pump distribution system. These systems lube the bearings, rings, connecting rods, wrist pins, cylinder walls etc with fresh new oil constantly! I am told(don't know for sure) that you can order the new Corvette with the system. Many raceing engines also use the system.
Dear Wing- There is no oil left over! Yes, Like a 4stroke Any tiny amount that makes it past the rings is burned very well. The US Gov mandated that these engines be clean and they are!
PS-Check out USCG engine exhaust test results and see which engine they say is cleanest!
Older 2 stroke engines depended on oil being mixed with fuel either as a pre-mix before it went into the tank or by a metering pump on the engine injecting oil into the fuel.
Evinrudes Etech's do not mix oil with the fuel as described above. Instead oil is distributed directly to critical lubrication points in the crankcase directly. Fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber just prior to ignition and does not go through the crankcase as in a normal 2 cycle. Any excess oil does get washed off the parts by the incoming air and does get burned but it is much less than would be consumed by a normal 2 stroke.
I am a Honda guy but I am getting to like the Etech concept. It may be the first sign of assimilation by the Etech borg.
If you don't have to drain the old oil, like in your car or truck, and change it. Where do you think the oil you have to repelnish went? Could it perhaps have been burnt??
