I have been doing some reading and I was wondering what the general opinion here is on Yamahas vs. Suzuki? Which is better? Which one would you buy? I am focusing on the 225hp motors between the two. Thanks for the input.
Base it on dealer support. Both engines are excellent choices. If the Yamaha dealer is closer ... then focus on those. If the Zuke is the same distance and offers better customer service... then check that one out.

exactly - I love watching guys get the "best deal", saving a few hun and then finding out the better dealer is closer and better trained...and then bithcing about it here....think long term relationship, not saving short term.....
Based on my own experience and what most others have reported, there seems to be a solid 25hp difference betwen the two motors. The Yamaha puts out about 212 and the Suzuki puts out about 238. If 212 is ok and the price is right, the Yamaha may be just fine. If the boat really requires more horsepower, the Suzuki may be the best choice. When you bought your last car or truck, did you opt for a larger engine?

You know i've seen many claims on this website about this motor makes x amount of horsepower, yet I have yet to see a single verifiable, independant, and reliable source quoted. Please provide a source or or your own dyno results in chart form if you performed your own tests.
I rode my boat with both twin Yams and Suzukis before I bought and the Suzukis have a lot more low end torque and a few mph faster speed. Both propped correctly.....that was plenty of proof for me. Better low end and top end on the same boat.....I have never seen anything in print but the Suzukis are real world stronger in the 225 class.

Couldn't agree more.

The EPA publishes the emissions test results for outboards (including HP output measured in kilowatts) and the link has been posted here before. The last time I saw it, I downloaded the 04-07 tables. They don't cover every possible engine, just the ones that were submitted to the EPA that year.
I don't have the link, but below is the line from the EPA engine certification test for the Yamaha 225 (Sorry for the messy post) The "155.37" is the output in Kilowatts (All engines are measured this way) Converted to HP it equals 208.3546HP. I could not find a Suzuki 225 in the 04, 05, 06, or 07 tables. For comparison, the 200 Suzuki is listed at 147.1KW which equates to 197.2643hp.
Perhaps somebody can respond with the link to these tables.

Are these the definitive word on motor output? I doubt it. As has been said before, even the same engine tested on different days or at different locations can/will have a different output number. But I think its as independent and unbiased as you're going to get.

I have tried both the 225 johnzuki and the 225 yammy I found the suki much stronger on a loaded 2301 seaswiirl I got the jonhsuki one of the reasons among others I got the seaswirl over x brand.A friend bought x brand with a yammi no problems or anything just wish he had a choice between that or a suzuki he also would prefer the suki. However we both have suki and yammi service close by so that didnt matter.

This is still far from claims of that motor gets 212 hp or 208 or 238. I'm looking for the sources that people who have provided these numbers use.
