Default 70 Ft. Yacht catches fire and sinks off FL Gulf Coast

03/15/07
Boat catches fire off Englewood; family survives

Six people made it to shore on the boat their yacht had been towing

VENICE -- Six people survived a fire on a 70-foot yacht Wednesday afternoon. The boat was two to three miles away from Manasota Beach.

Orlando residents Mark Stammel, his wife Sylvia, their 9-year-old twins Shawn and Keanu, and Sylvia's aunt and uncle, who were visiting from Germany, were taking the yacht from Longboat Key to South Seas Plantation in Fort Myers. At one point, Mark lost power to the engines and couldn't get into gear, he said. He realized that smoke was coming out of the engine room.

"So, I grabbed the kids, the wife and the guests," he said, "threw them in the water, swam to the fishing boat we were towing."

The family stayed in the area on the 21-foot fishing boat until they were escorted by emergency boats to the marina at Crow's Nest, near the South Jetty in Venice. The U.S. Coast Guard, Venice Fire Department, Venice Police Department and Charlotte County Sheriff's Office responded.

The family purchased the Azimuth at a boat show in Fort Lauderdale last December. Mark said it had just been overhauled and had a new fire system. He did not know what could have caused the fire.

"I usually have an answer for everything, but that one beats me," he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard has no vessels designed to fight fires and usually has to rely on local fire departments with fireboats, said Petty Officer Tasha Tully. The Englewood Fire Department sent its fireboat, but turned back because the yacht was too far away, said Charlotte County Fire and EMS spokeswoman Dee Hawkins. The fire was probably still raging when the Stammels landed on shore, said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lt. Rob Gerkin. Smoke was visible from the shore.

"There was 500 gallons of diesel on board, so it's fully involved," Gerkin said.

Stammel said his plan for the evening was to return home.

"We'll put the little boat into its place at Longboat Key Moorings and we'll get the car -- hopefully find a locksmith -- we'll get the car running and drive back to Orlando," he said, "put the kids into their beds in their home and have a good night."

Azimuts or commonly known as MUTS have been known for their electrical systems. Got to love those Italian motor yachts!! Seen a few of them burn in Lauderdale over the years.

In that case, I retract my previous statement

I would be hard pressed to think it was sunk on purpose with the 9 year olds aboard. Now if it had been the in laws instead of the Aunt and Uncle that would be a different story!

I was gonna say "or an ex-wife and her lawyer inspecting the boat" but I thought better of it...

You guys are tough. A boat that was purchased last December at the boat show (therefore I assume new) was burned intentionally? Then some media outlet quotes 2 sentences and the guy is assumed to not care a lick? Then he was alone without a crew and it is assumed he is a jerk and can't handle the boat as in any idiot can jacknife a tractor trailer? Tough crowd. Hope you never go though what he went through and then are ridiculed on some boat chat room!

What Class Act said!

About going shorthanded, one of the very finest boaters I know runs his 67 Hatt all the time alone, with just his wife for crew (I'll admit, she's a damn fine hand, not the typical "Admiral.") This on the great lakes open water and to some very tight tolerances on the inland rivers.

And how many delivery captains, with only a mate, run boats up to 100' all the time, again in some very difficult water?

I give the guy a hand- could have been disasterous - the family is ok - that is what is important - the boat can be replaced. I would hope my reaction (here's hoping to never finding out) would be thankul that my family and/or passengers were safe and able to sleep comfortably in their own beds, rather than PO'd about the loss of the boat - that can come later - much later.

What a suprise. Everyone on this forum knows more than a guy who can handle a 70' boat, and in the case of an emergency get everyone home safely.

I agree a hundred percent with class act plus, , These days running a seventy footer, with remote steering stations, wireless steering stations, bow thrusters, stern thrusters, electronic gadgets up the wazoo, (as I'm sure a brand new Azimut would have)it is not uncommon at all to have owners operating these yachts. I have run numerous boats in the 70 range up and down the coast with only a mate.
I give the guy alot of credit for getting everyone off safe, the most important thing of all. Glad everyone was safe

I climbed around a 39 AZ because the wife liked the "look" and I was not impressed with the mechanical layout and access. AZ likes to give the impression that they build a world class yacht but their is more style than substance at least based on what I discovered. This poor guy paid a few million dollars to end up with melted plastic.
