Default Quick question: changing 140 Johnson/Suzuki oil

Going to be in town this weekend for one day, I need to go ahead and change the oil and filter on my "new" Johnson 140 4-stroke.

I have not been able to get a shop manual yet. I will research oil types later, but where do I need to get everything to do this? Do I need to go to a Suzuki or Johnson shop? How often does the filter need to be changed? Thanks.

Also, can the lower unit oil be changed just as most any other 2 stroke outboard?

I just did mine a few weeks ago. You don't need the manual. I went ahead and changed the filter because I working on the motor anyways. The mid section cover just unbolts to gain access to the filter. There is also a grease fitting that can only be accessed with this cover off. Make sure you put a new gasket on the drain plug. It was also recommended by a local marine mechanic to use an OEM filter. He said a few of the sierras they used had the threads blowout and the filter come off the motor.

Goodluck!

change your oil and filter every 75-100 hours. Changing the gear oil is no different than a 2 stroke and should be done when you change the oil

Also with my 140 Suk some drain plug washers were included in the tool kit.
