18' Whaler outrage. When I was in my later teens, my buddy and I shark fished on average 3 times a week and would run in excess of 50 miles offshore. Never felt uncomforatable or nervous and we certainly made the run home in some very heavy seas...some times the waves were taller than the boat was long...or at least it seemed that way

3' innertubes 1/2 mile out
7' surfboards, reefs about 2 miles out in Hawaii
12' kyayk 10 miles out with boat assist, 4 miles paddling myself
14' Laser sailboat 5 miles out
17' BW up to 25 miles out
18' seaswirl 45 out, but mostly just 20 miles, 50 days a years x 8 years
now I have a 19', so a trip to the sun is on my horizion of planned events.
17 Ft SEA FOX, 25 miles out 2 times. Usually 10 miles out, when going offshore. On the days I went out 25 I saw
pontoon boats and a 12-14 ft jet boat at about 20 miles offshore.
Let me say both times were in the summer less than 2 ft seas, on the Gulf, very close to the entrance of the shipping channel.
Shore= Where land meets water.
OFF Shore= Where you are no longer on land.
My definition is clearing the inlet...Once you take that step into the wild blue yonder, you are offically "Offshore".
To answer your question...I have been out 50 miles in a 20'SeaCraft (out in 2footers, and back in 5-6 footers with a bayliner chasing me down casting heavers at me because I was "potlicking" his spot as I ran behind his boat from 3 miles away. He was yelling that I was in his chum slick...an opened 12oz can of mackral he had over the side of his boat as chum while fishing for mako's with a zebo 303 and 30lb line on a spinning rod...did I mention he held the reel upside down and cranked backwards?...yea he was upset, but not as upset as the guy that was anchored up in the inlet with his stern to the waves... yea, you guessed it, he got swamped by me & the bayliner as we made our way through the unmarked no wake zone this guy established earlier that day. SOooo, that guy jumped out of his smaller boat as it sunk (and put it up for sale on ebay) and into his Super Contender (because we all know, there is no greater piece of fiberglass gracing the waterways)... chased down the bayliner, called his buddy that has a cool truck and Hooter stickers on the side of his boat and proceeded to beat him to a inch of his life....as for me, I continue to fish and don't get caught up in the non-fishing BS that wally-world boaters bring to this site.
Shore= Where land meets water.
OFF Shore= Where you are no longer on land.
So if I am wade fishing along the coast I am offshore?
Looks like offshore in a pair of waders is winning so far.
Cape Lookout Shoals in a 13 Whaler. 20-25 miles out in a 17 Montauk. (neither on a regular basis)
