Default Stern seat for a Eastern

I need some help with ideas on how to make a stern seat for my Eastern. I know Eastern makes a stern seat that they will install for $1900, but that's alot of money for a place to sit. I was thinking about using a fiberglass dock box (72x20x18) and making a seat back out of teak or mahogony. Does anyone have any idea if a dock box is strong enough to support people sitting on it as well as the stress of a seat back with people leaning against it? I could just use some folding deck chairs but I like the idea of a solid seat that wont slide around in addition to the extra lockable storage space for fishing gear. Thanks.

I was thinking of that. I saw some cooler seats with cushions and a swing back. But, my boat has fairly low gunnels (22 inches) so with the cooler seats you would be sitting higher than the gunnels which makes me nervous about little kids (and/or not so bright adults) sliding off the seat and over the side. The cooler seat idea is a good one but I would feel safer if the seat was below the gunnels even if it was by just a few inches.

This is my first post and it's 4:00 A.M. and I got a response in just a few minutes. I guess there are more lunatics out there than just myself who like to read about boating. This site is great!

AlloyToy,

I have an Eastern 24 Lobster boat. I do not have any boxes in the stern, just an open cockpit. I can't post pictures right now, I work nights and I'm heading home to sleep. Thanks for your help.

I was wondering the same thing - Grady-White has a superb feature in their transom-mounted swing down seat and was wondering if it could be purchased through the dealer, or from a custom fabricator, and installed on any boat that has the open space avail. Opens up fishing room when not needed, but nice and stable when extra seating is needed...
