Default Center Console: Leaning Post vs. Cooler Seat

My primary application will be striper fishing on area lakes in central Texas. Probably would troll 35% of the time (often single-handed) and drift live bait and/or jig 65%. Most of the boats have adequately insulated fish boxes and I don't need a 48 quart or larger ice chest for a 12 or so canned drinks.

Is sitting on a cooler seat really more comfortable than leaning back on a leaning post while underway?

Definately leaning post over a helm chair for a CC...

OR

A combo of a leaner and a tackle center/storage area/seat

On my cc I had a cooler seat with a seat back that could swing back and forth so that when fishing you could face the stern. I really liked it and many people on the boat commented on the good design. It was very comfortable to fish from when drifting. I have seen similar seats with a feature where you could lock the seat in three different positions so that it could be used as a leaning post when necessary. Just my 2 cents.

I have a 19ft cc with the cooler seat/leaning post combo. It's really a cooler seat with a back rest which can go back (use cooler as a seat) or forward to be used as a leaning post.

It's not as sturdy as a true leaning post but it does an excellent job. I really like to fact that I can move it back so I can sit on the cooler and have a nice back-rest. Comes in handy when I'm trolling for stripers up here- I simply sit on the cooler and kick my feet up on the console and relax untill i get a fish on

The drawbacks are that it does not have rod holders build in nor does it have tackle storage.

Since I only use the cooler as a cooler on a few trips, I'm going to have a cooler sized storage bin done up in fiberglass with handy pull out trays for my fishing gear and it will have a padded top like the cooler. Figure it should give me the best of both worlds.

My leaning post has a fold-out footrest, a backrest and 3 rocket launcher rod holders. Standing or sitting atop the leaning post gives me a better view ahead, safer than sitting lower as on a cooler seat. But the console on my BayScout is taller than some.

Like to sit on that five inches of foam, tilt the backrest forward, prop our feet on the motor well, pull our cap down over our eyes, and tell the grandson to watch the rods closely. Yep, its a cooler seat fer me!

With the leaning post, you have the best of both worlds. Get a post that has a backrest and that is deep enough to sit on. Even if you don't need a cooler that big, you can use the space to store tackle boxes, buckets, etc. I like the fact that you're a lot higher sitting on the leaning post.
