Default Power to weight ratios of new 275+ hp engines, 350 Yam, 300 merc, zuke , etc.

This question was asked on another forum and these are my results, i figured i would post them here as well:

Yamaha 350 = 804/350 = 2.3 lbs/hp wot fuel burn = ?)

Mercury 300 xs = 517/300 = 1.7 lbs/hp: wot = 25 gph (Really 315+)

Mercury 300 Verado = 635/300 = 2.1 lbs/hp: wot = ? 26-28 gph

Mercury 275 Verado = 635/275 = 2.3 lbs/hp: wot = 26 gph

Suzuki 300 = 614/300 = 2.05 lbs/hp: wot = 25 gph

To be announced eventually:

Mercury 325 Verado = 635/325 = 1.95 lbs/hp wot= ? gph

Suzuki 350 = 614/350 = 1.75 lbs/hp

Yamaha 400 = 804/400 = 2.0 lbs/hp

and the winner is ,, for now, obviously merc racing 300xs (it's a 2 stoke, go figure), not only does it have the best weight to horsepower ratio, it burns the least amount of fuel, and probably will have a smaller gearcase than Suzuki or Yamaha (drag)

if you consider propshaft hp of the 300 xs,,, 517/315 = 1.64 lbs/hp

Coming in second would be Zuke 300 @ 2.05, closely trailed by 300 vrat @ 2.1

Yamaha would have a decent power to weight ratio if they reached 450 at
804/450 = 1.8, lbs/hp

And the winner of the all time worst outboard horsepower to weight ratio is my 60hp Suzuki 4 stroke at 335lbs for a hp/wt ratio of 5.58....That is unless you include the horendous power to weight ratio of the 2.5hp Suzuk 4 stroke at a whopping 12lbs/hp.

When is Suzuki coming out with a 350?

What is the power to weight ratio of the 2-stoke oil you have to bring on a trip? And Trip I mean a week in the Bahamas and burning over a thousand gallons of fuel.

You make a very valid point. But it is only one point in a lengthy decision that has to be made.

Interesting...

Perhaps a similar comparison of LBS to foot lbs of torque would be revealing?

Yamaha 300 HPDI (granted a 2- stroke):

543lbs / 300hp = 1.81

Just some more info into the mix!

You forgot to factor in a well known fact that Mercury owners tend weigh more than Yamaha owners.

OK, now do we use advertised HP, or actual...

300HPDI = roughly 275Hp

Nothing really to contribute, just stirring the proverbial pot

Not even one.

1000 gal x 1.5 mpg avg = 1500 miles. Even at an avg speed of 20 mph, that is 75 hours.

I average about 1600 gallons between oil changes, so about 2/3rds of one oil change.

Bigfish,
The new verado 275 supposedly burns 26 gph, but thats just what I have heard

Plenty of Backup,
If the oil to fuel burn ratio is 50:1 on the 2-stroke, then you would have to bring 20 gallons of oil with you to burn 1000 gallons of gas, but since the 2 stroke burns less fuel, then maybe you only would need 900 or so gallons of fuel with you to travel the same distance or 18 gallons of oil,
Still less weight with the 2- stroke
