Default Yamaha warranty - "Y.E.S." or "No"???

Hmmmm ... I know we've got a Yamaha "tech" or two out there, but this may be more of a "Sales Dept." question???

"Owners' responses" are ALSO welcome!

Anyone know what the deal is on whether or not you can purchase an "extended warranty" on the "Y.E.S." warranty IF you do it BEFORE the "Y.E.S." warranty expires?????

I asked my dealer and there seems to be some question on this???

At one time, Yamaha would ONLY let you buy a "Y.E.S." DURING the original FACTORY warranty period of the motor - EX. If you had a Yamaha with a 2-year FACTORY warranty, you could purchase a "Y.E.S." for "x" period of time IF you did it BEFORE the original FACTORY warranty expired.

If you got an "extra" "Y.E.S." warranty (say 1 year) when you purchased the motor ORIGINALLY - say through a "promo" at a boat show - you can NOT "extended" the "Y.E.S." warranty once you are into it.

Say you got a 2-year FACTORY + a 1-year "Y.E.S.", then you can NOT extend the "Y.E.S." warranty AFTER the beginning of the 3rd year.

Now, to throw a wrench into this, Yamaha DOES offer a "used motor" warranty - for those who are BEYOND their warranty period - i.e. NO warranty left! It's good on motors as far back as 1998! Runs about $1,100 for 1 year on a 115/2-stroke!

I guess my question is WHY don't they (or DO they?) offer an extension of the "Y.E.S." warranty, as long as you do it BEFORE the "Y.E.S." warranty expires?????

If they are willing to warranty an "out of warranty" motor, WHY wouldn't they be willing to extend the warranty on an "IN warranty" motor?????

Just curious - my dealer has left a message with Yamaha sales but dealer will not be back from vacation until early January.

Anyone else run into this before???

Thanks for your response and I hope I haven't confused the post!

Regards,
Bruce W

I can only comment on part of the question. If you buy the warranty before the original warranty expires but not at the time you purchase the motors, the warranty cost 10% more than if you buy it at the time of the motor purchase.

BUMP!

Since another "Y.E.S." warranty question has popped up, thought I'd bump this to see if anyone else has run into this situation?

SIM - Any word from Yamaha??? I appreciate your checking into it! I keep forgetting to call that number with the holidays - probably the same at your end!

I'll try tomorrow if I think of it!

Thanks for the help, guys!

Default Yamaha warranty - "Y.E.S." or "No"???

SIM (Andy),

You are a gentleman!!!

I blame ME for not trying to get Yama on the horn! Holidays, holidays!

My dealer tried to get through 3-4 times while I was picking up my boat on the 18th - no dice. The owner left a message for Yama to call back but they (dealer) DON'T have an answering machine! I told them I couldn't believe this question hadn't come up BEFORE??? They sell Grady's, Scout's, and a pontoon line - just about ALL (except some of the pontoons) with Yama's!

Like I said before - if Yama offers a warranty (or RE-warranty) on motors that are OUT of warranty, I can't imagine they wouldn't offer an EXTENSION of a Y.E.S. warranty if it was done BEFORE the Y.E.S. warranty expired?

I'm wondering that since the 1-year Y.E.S. "extension" that I got from a boat show promo (when I bought my boat) was FREE (to me), if that is the excuse that Yama might be using on the "extension" of the Y.E.S.? I'm not asking for anything FREE - just asking if I can purchase ADDITIONAL warranty before the Y.E.S. expires in late February???

Looking forward to what they have to say!

Thanks again for your help!

Default Yamaha warranty - "Y.E.S." or "No"???

Bruce,

I talked with Yamaha YES about your questions.

If your engine is in the first 2 years of original warranty, you can upgrade the YES to 2 or 3 years at the new engine rate(cheaper). If the engine goes into your 1 year of YES promo coverage, you can still upgrade but it is at the used engine rate and would have to be done on the phone by the dealer in lieu of on the Yamaha computer system. They would in effect cancle out your 1 year promo and add the two years of coverage.

When did your engine get registered? Primary ID#????

Default Yamaha warranty - "Y.E.S." or "No"???

Andy,

Once again, I want to THANK YOU for taking the time to check into this!!! Wish my dealer had told me during the first 2 years that I could buy the "extension" of the Y.E.S.?

According to the Yamaha "Y.E.S." warranty papers, the "WARRANTY START DATE" was 2/24/2001 (correct!) and the "Y.E.S." EXPIRATION DATE" is 2/23/2004. So, I'm WAY past that first 2-year period.

PRIMARY I.D. is "6E5L 409008".

So now I would have to pay/buy a "used motor" extension? Still think its crazy that although it IS under warranty, RIGHT NOW, that I've gotta' look at paying the same $'s as someone who's motor is NOT CURRENTLY under warranty??? I know that's not YOUR fault, but it sucks!

Do you have any idea what it might run or do I have to get that info from MY Yama dealer? I think my dealer said "$1,100"(?) for a 1-year extension, and that was the "used motor" extension price? Since I have my boat "for sale", I sure don't want to spend that kind og money to extend it for a new owner!

Thanks so much for your research and help on this!!!

Regards,
Bruce W
