Default San Diego fishing boats

I am going to San Diego on Feb., 18 for 4 days and would like to go on a party boat to fish for a day. I am inquiring to see if anyone has any input on a good boat to go on or a marina that someone is familiar with that that has party boats or possibly a reasonable charter boat. I would appreciate any info about this.

Thanks

I would also check out Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay...A short while ago the landings were doing well on larger squid on night runs. These squid were about 40lbs or so.

H&M, Point Loma Sportfishing, Islandia Sportfishing, and Seaforth are the main operators of party (AKA Cattle) boats out here.

Here's the link for Seaforth:

Good Luck

h&m point loma and fishermans landing are all in the same place (within a hundred yards) that will be your best bet , i've never went on any trips shorter then 2 days out of there so for the 1/2 day boats i don't have any recommendations

Local fishing is shutdown until 3/1 except for bass and sculpin. Both small fish. A typical boat right now is counting mackerel, that's how bad it is this time of year. Humbolt Squid fishing (to 50 lbs) is pretty much over but some nites like last nite they found them (121 for +30 anglers). Fishing in mexican waters is your best chance to hook into some larger rockfish (very good eating) and an occasional yellowtail. It's an amberjack but is considered a sportfish here. The Pt Loma landings mentioned above have at least one 3/4 day boat going to the Coronado Islands into Mexico daily. They are beautiful islands with a wealth of sea life around them. Expect to see some whales and definately pods of dolphin.

Minor correction: amberjacks and yellowtail are different fish in the family commonly known as Jacks: These are a few that that I think all related:

California Yellowtail
Greater Amberjack
Lesser Amberjack
Jack Crevalle
Green Crevalle
Almaco Jack
Leather Jack
Bar Jack
Yellow Jack
Horse-Eye Jack
Rainbow Runner
Pilotfish
Banded Rudderfish
Florida Pompano
Permit
African Pompano
Lookdown
Spanish Mackerel
Horse Mackerel
Blue Runners

If you go with the "Big Three" landings at Point Loma, there may be two 3/4 day boats that leave about 6-7 am and return in the afternoon. You'll want one of these at the least to get as far as the Coronados in Mexican waters this time of year. The boats are the Malahini at H&M Sportfishing, and the Point Loma at Point Loma Sportfishing. I've fished both and like them. Parking can be a problem at these landings; you may have to park across the street.

At Mission Bay Seaforth landing has one, sometimes two 3/4 day boats. The Mission Belle is pretty good. Also the San Diego. Lots of free parking.

February is the off season; trips do not run daily and are subject to having enough paying passengers. Catch will probably be rockfish and whitefish, caught on the bottom. Maybe sandbass. Maybe lingcod. Yellowtail possible but don't count on it.

Overnight or 1.5 ay trips will get more and larger bottom fish, and maybe some yellowtail.

You will be fishing 3/4 day for Rockfish, Calico & Sandbass, maybe a few Bonito and barracuda around.
Heres a tip, fish out of Dana Landing (islandiasportfishing or seaforth landing if you want to fish beautiful LaJolla and the Kelp there, fish out of Point Loma (those above) for a 3/4 day trip to the islands. Go to bloodydecks.com to get the dope right before you arrive, or PM me.
