Default Best used 32-35 boat for offshore/family 150K+-?

Was thinking luhrs until I was on this site! Fished blackfins and feel I can score a good one from the mid 90's for around 150k that doesnt require MAJOR work. Tiara is nice, but wife prefers a flybridge since she gets seasick at times. Needs to sleep 4 or more. Any others I should look at? Hoping to buy next season. This year is a research year! Thanks in advance!!

Bertram 33. They'll be from the early 90's to late 80's, but you'll get what you're looking for.

First you had better get your priorities straight. What will the boat be used for the most? Be honest.

There is not much point in getting a boat with a fine fishing pedigree such as a Bertram or Blackfin if 7 or 8 times out of 10 the boat is going cruising. 'She who must be obeyed' could not care less about a dazzling top speed provided by huge engines fed by big tanks taking up space that she would rather have as human space. Given the choice she would much rather have 100gal of fresh water than an extra 100gal capacity of fuel to feed those roaring beasts under the cabin & cockpit sole.

125-150K buys an early 00s Albin 32+2 Command Bridge with a single 370hp Cummins that cruises at a loaded honest 18kts. It is no speedster but it is not guzzling anything near 20gph either. It has a galley that has counter space that puts cruisers like the Tiara 35 to shame. Main cabin galley/berth is larger than any land king sized bed. The fwd cabin has a center queen berth. No V berth stupidness. The head has a shower stall which is fed by a 115gal freshwater supply. I did a homemade filler cushion for the bridge. The boat can now easily sleep 6 adults. That is more water than many trawlers in the mid 30' range.

In short, it is very much a 'womans' boat in the cabin. If she is not happy, nobody is happy.

To own one of these you need to be prepared to have people looking at you. It is not one of those cookey cutter convertables or express styled boats which look so much like the next one.

Think very hard on the comments that Doug gave above. As you are no doubt aware, boats are compromises. If you want a compromise boat, consider a late 80's Betram Flybridge Cruiser in lieu of the 33 Sportfish. Cockpit a bit smaller but with a larger and more family friendly interior. Yes, you will have to put up with a V-Berth, but the salon and second stateroom are actually usable. I know of more than one that have recently been repowered with diesels that make them even more desireable. All things considered, take your time and look around. Send me a note if you like

Fin - where are your cruising grounds? Doug's on to something with the Albins - I really like the Albin 35 Command bridge. The 32+2's are very nice too-not as fast as the Bertram 33's but wont use as much fuel either. We've been very happy with our Cape Dory 33 w/ twin volvos cruise 17-18 averages 9-10 gph per season - maybe older than what you are looking for but there is a nice one in Maine-asking $$ seems too high but its been on the market for a while so maybe they are ready to get a little more realistic. Cape Dory also made a 36 version with twin detroits that has an additional state room so she sleeps 6. Have fun in the search it was my favorite part of the wintger/spring of '05!

Fin - I have two 33 Blackfins on trade. Nice boats and both are 100% turn key. Drop me a PM and I can tell you more and also make a few other suggestions.

Err, why would a flybridge be better than an express for seasickness?

green gills - I know that in heavy seas my family likes it better on the flybridge. They say seeing water above eye level in the salon gives them an uneasy feeling-no one has ever gotten actaully sick but they'll usually come up when the going gets rough.

For me it comes in one size. A 35Bertram. Fishing, cruising and it's a Bertram. A can't be bet combination. These old 35 Bertram hulls can be repowered with todays engines putting out 450 plus HP. You can't use all those horses most days; but it can be done. If I was going to mainly cruise I would look at 35 Vikings with 3208 Cats. Great interior; but not a good hull design to pump up the power.

Thanks guys! We will be boating out of Long Island Sound/ Montauk occasionally. Appreciate all the thoughtful ideas about keeping the wife happy and interested. At heart, I'm a bertram, blackfin, cabo type and will fish it locally 5/10 trips. The rest will be cruising with the family and a couple of offshore trips for tuna/mahi/shark during the season. She's more of a luhrs, ocean yacht, albin type. Keep the ideas coming. We will be checking out all that you mentioned this year. Thanks!!

My wife is more interested in the fact that we can go out and get back in some pretty nasty sh** than she is in the interior accomodations. That being said, she also loves the interior of our 33 FBC, especially the large (for a 33 foot boat) salon. Like CB, I also like the 35 Bert, but oddly it never came with a second stateroom like my FBC. If it had, I'd probably own one.

I looked at a 1986 Viking 35 with 3208's a few weeks ago. Nice boat, but I was shoe-horned in between the engines when I dropped into the bilge. The engines are much closer together than in a Cat powered Bert (33 or 35).

Thanks for reminding me that happy wife equals happy boater. Enjoyed the bertram33 website! Will look again at the albins, although, I have to say I'm not in love with the overall appearance. Last call for tyour opinions on the ultimate family and fishing boat. If you have an open style favorite please post as well. We are going to try out a few in that style as well. Thanks again!!

Lets not forget about a 30 Pursuit offshore express twin diesels loaded and ready to go far less than 150 k. I'd say 105k for you but act now as they say.lol I have one for sale

A discussion close to my heart on many levels. I'll add a vote for the Bertram 33 FBC as a great candidate in this price range. You should be able to get a very nice example with what you have to spend. It's one of my favorite boats becuase it does so many things well and is a quality, timeless boat. It's considered a deep Vee but it's not quite as deep as the Blackfin and from all I've read, the hull is easier to push while still being blue water capable. The fins interior is not comperable the Bert FBC, in my view- it's more in line with the Bert 33 SF, which is not as large for a family. The Fin (and Bert 33 SF) do have the advantage of being movable over the raod without removing the flybridge, something you have to do with the FBC.

The Albin 32+2 is also a great choice but some of it's strengths can also be weaknesses in the view of some. I like the single for effeiciency and maintenance reasons- some prefer twins as an added measure of comfort off shore. I beleive the Albin hull is cored. I haven't heard of any issues with their implementation, but I have a phobia of cored hulls. The stern is also very flat, but it has a keel and tracks very well by all accounts. To my way of thinking, this boat has very few (if any) rivals for efficeincy above trawler hull speeds. It's a great boat for extended outtings with very impressive space utilization and layout. It can serve as a fishing platfrom quite well but that wasn't it's primary intent. It's also low enough to move over the road without disassembly.

Deleted. I saw above that you ruled out Tiara expresses.

Tiara 33 Sportbridge? A friend has one and fishes and cruises the hell out of it. There should be a few on the market around $150k.

I will be checking out Tiara/Stamas etc. Just afraid my wife might be claustrophobic in an open style boat. Thanks for mentioning the sport bridge version and that it works well for your friend.
Being a new user of this site, I am awed and amazed at the knowledge on various topics and the sharing of ideas that occur. Feel like a real rookie even though I had a 22ft center console for 10 years!!
