Default PURSUIT 3000 EXPRESS QUESTION RE THE ENGINE NOISE

Does anyone know why Pursuit did not line the under side of the deck with lead sound insulation above the engine room in the 3000 Express?

It is a little noisy both at idle and underway. I am going to add the sound isulation.....just wondered if there was a reason it was not done at the factory

Gas or diesel?

The 3000 Offshore (diesel tower model) I looked at had a nice insulation job that appeared to be factory installed. I have no idea why the express would be different. I remember it well because when the hatch was tilted up it dripped water that was trapped under or in the insulation.

Great boat but the inboards are noisy no matter what you do. The noise comes from both the deck and the exhaust. The exhaust is on the sides at the back of the boat and if you slow down a bit more than you would like the water deadens the sound a bit. Bose also makes some nice headsets to cancel noise. All things I have seen my Uncle do to deal with his 3000 Express.

Good Luck

If you have an older model like mine a 97 with diesels they are louder than 4 stroke OB's for sure. However compare them to a set of 3126 cats on a 31 blackfin they are relatively quiet. I mean they are diesels for cryin out loud. I love the sound of iron in the belly the turbos winding up gets the blood flowin

Let me know if you find an answer. I also have the gas inboards - I don't mind the noise at idle or trolling speed but above 2K rpms they get a little loud. Nothing like my old 2 stroke outboards though! I'd rather have the noise than quiet though - I had a waterpump seize in the fall and it was awful quiet on the starboard side. Single engine ops were ok but pretty slow.

Engine insulation is generally a factory option not standard equipment.

Mcmaster carr sells foam insulation that works well (according to my brother) and is very light weight. The lead based insulation is heavy stuff. Getting it to stay put on the underside of an engine compartment can be a challenge unless you install screws and large washers.

I'm interested as well in this thread, however I hadn't noticed the engine noise with my 350 Mercruisers, just the exhaust. I explored putting another muffler(s) on it but since the existing ones are under the rear deck and hard to reach, I gave up.
Keep us posted along with pics if you can. I may follow your path.

How about it offshore27ns?
Did you go ahead and put in the insulation and if so, did it help?

If it is like my Tiara I believe they did, the insulation is sandwiched between the fiberglass in the hatch itself. I also have carpeting which makes a difference when I have it in. Why not grab some carpet for your upper cockpit area?

SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE POST.
I have not tackled the job yet. I will probably do so in a week or two. I won't know the results until late April or May when the boat goes in the water....stay tuned

When I commercial fished in Alaska I slept about 6' from a Detroit diesel. The engine room was completely lined with lead sheet and it was the quietest boat in the fleet. Well worth the effort if you ask me.

A little off topic, but how do you guys like your 3000 Expresses? I'm considering one as an upgrade from my 25' Grady.

Thanks.

Love the boat! I have a 1999 3000 express with the gas inboards. Great for fishing, family, weekend, whatever. I've spent a lot of time looking at other comparable models and can't find one I like better - the fit and finish is great and the layout works well for my family. Lately though I have been liking some of the newer express models with outboards. If you decide on a 3000 express with gas inboards make sure the recall work on the risers is done. Good luck.

offshore27ns,
What kind of insulation are you planning on using and how do you intend to attach it to the underside of the hatch? Maybe I'll do mine right away.

I am using the foam lead lined insulation. There are pins that must be expoxied to the under side of the hatch, then the insulation is forced over the pin and then retainer clips slide over the end of the pins.

How heavy is the lining? Are you concerned that the hatch lifter might lose some of its life expectancy due to the extra weight?

CGaviator,
That hatch is really heavy to begin with. I disconnected the actuators once and tried to lift it higher with a ratchet strap tied to the rocket launcher bar on top. Couldn't budge it. It must take a crane to lift off the deck for an engine replacement. Plus, I must have 300#'s of gear in the cabinets, so, I don't think another 100#'s hanging on it would change a thing.

offshore27ns
Where did you find the insulation?

Good point on the gear - probably no more than a few 48 oz bottom sinkers!
