F250 Purchase for Contender 23 open Not sure if this is appropriate to open new thread as questions relate (but are more specific due to all responses received here) to my existing thread "Repowering Options for Contender 23".
Have settled on Yamaha F250 as engine and just want to relay my experience in shopping for motors thus far. Started with internet for approximate prices and then called dealers in area (MA) to gauge their approx pricing/availability (but not quoting internet prices or asking them to compete).
1. Ed's has listed price of 14,500 for F250 w/no prop or rigging. Stated that year of production not indicated by letter on these motors since July 2005 so motor is "current technology". (Yamaha rep confirmed this as to model number, but stated that year of manufacture indicated on crate of motor and on right side side of tilt/trim motor- I guess I should have asked this question more precisely)
As per new requirements (Yamaha?) engine can only be paid for and shipped to authorized dealer. I had heard about the shipping to dealer only rule, but was surprised by the payment requirement. I would think that this is significant reduction of benefit in buying direct from Ed's as you now are involving dealer in your pricing discussion and turning cash over to them. So it looks like, you have to pay dealer to agree to buy engine for you, and then pay them to do installation. (I've installed and worked on my other engines (all 2strokes), but there is logic to having professional dealer ensure that installation done properly, esp. if you will be turning to them for any warranty problems.) Assuming you could get motor shipped to you from Eds, I wonder if self-installation would void warranty in any event?
Warranty is 3yr standard; no extended warranty available through them. (I know that others have had good luck purchasing extended warranties from others incl. site sponsors (about 2,000??), but in talkng with Yamaha rep, he informed me that current Yamaha turn-key promotion (Jan 3- Mar. 31, 2007) provides standard plus extended 3yr warranty on F250 (and other motors?) for free (as well as $750 store credit) to "participating dealers". This is available on existing stock purchased in time period as well as on a special ordered motor by dealer during this time period if they oon't have your motor in stock.
2. IBoats lists F250 (year 2006) for 15,999. Shipping is about 630 to MA. They will ship to me directly and no intermediate purchase through dealer is required. Standard 3 yr warranty; extended not available through them. If I install, I wonder how registration of factory warranty is effected? Can you do it yourself or does Iboats have to do it, or do you have to have dealer install to get registered?
3. Boats.net lists F250 ("Current", but not sure of yr of manuf.) for 15,572; presumably with 3 yr standard warranty. Requires shipping to (but not payment by) dealer. Have requested info re shipping and extended warranty.
4. Dealers in Area: In fairness to them, I should say I just called so they had no idea whether I was serious buyer or not. I also didn't bargain on phone as I don't think its fair until they know whether I am serious yet.
a. 1st stated price of 20,490 (which must be around msrp) and then added about 3,500 for new rigging gauges/prop and installation for total of about 24,000. He stated that my existing Yamaha controls and gauges for 92 Yamaha 225 ETXD would need to be changed out (contrary to what Yamaha rep said-they would all work??)Presumably this is with turn key promotion package of 3 yrs extended warranty and 750 store credit, but honestly, I forgot to ask after hearing initial price.
b. 2nd stated 17,900; confirmed that could use existing gauges. 800 for installation. Also confirmed that turn key promotion available (3yr extended warranty and 750 store credit)
These are results of preliminary search, but I thought it might be useful to share with others going through same process and to gain knowledge from others who have already been there and done that... Any input welcomed.
thanks,
