Default Lower unit gearcase oil

I drained my lower unit over the weekend. The oil that came out was not clear. It was opaque, but the consistancy was even. There was no foam or any streaking in the oil when i drained it. Is this what it is supposed to look like.

This is the 2nd time i have winterized, I don't remember the oil looking this way last year. I'm hoping it is because it was so cold. A few notes... the engine was cold (40 to 45 degrees) when i drained it. The oil was evinrude/johnson from the dealer. The yellow streaks on the surface in the picture are drips of new oil from the pump fill tube. (I filled it with some penzoil gearcase lube for the winter, I'm gonna pull the lower unit to do the impeller in the spring before i run it) There was no major pieces of metal that came out, only some metallic dust towards the end of the draining. The seal behind the prop looked fine... no mono wrapped around it, no cracking, etc...

Thanks, Tim

looks good excecpt for the cheap oil you dripped in with it...how much did you save by using that for the winter ...now you'll have residue from that stuff when you put the good oil back in

Thanks guys. "Too good" sounds like the perfect answer.

The original oil was Evinrude/Johnson HPF. The yellow oil wasn't necessarily cheap... It was Penzoil something or other. I dont have the container anymore. I was kind-of in a jam. West Marine is 10 minutes from my house. The nearest dealer that was open is almost an hour away. I got the best stuff they had. I'll be sure to let it drain for a long time in the spring before i put the good stuff back in.

Tim

don't listen to that guy. that oil is fine, that much residue does nothing other than make a different color.

I dunno. Something looks wrong to me. On every lower unit I have ever checked, the oil is black as coal, and usually has water in it. I don't know what that stuff is. At least tell me it stinks to high heavens!

rolandt03 you're a pretty serious guy ..I guess you thought I was serious when I said cheap oil residue..my point was why use cheap oil ,when the good stuff isn't much more..It takes less than a quart ..and doesn't need changing often ,unless you have a problem

sorry, i am use to people being retarded on these about little things, i do agree with you on the prices. personaly the oil didn't look used at all, it's like its fresh out of the bottle i would run it at least another season or two if its not leaking. once again sorry, my mistake
