My bro bought the 265 Albe I asked about a couple of weeks ago. If I can find a sitter for my mutts, I'm going up to fish with him next week. He says people fishing the Norfolk Canyon and Fingers can reach shore with cell phoes and VHF. I'm not sure about the distance, but I'm doubtful. Anybody know the truth? Thanks, chip.
A similar thread was posted several weeks ago on www.tidalfish.com's offshore board. As far as cellphones were concerned the old bag phones could transmitt the furthest due to their 5 watt's.
I was at my office in Norfolk late least May, when I got a call from a buddy. They were at the weather buoy some 50 NM off Virginia Beach. They called to tell me they were burning up the dolphin. Nice.
Please be advised that was a tremendously freak occurrence. At first I didn't want to believe it, but it was true. Some convergence of atmospheric events allowed it to happen that day. Most days, most phones, you'd be lucky to get a signal much beyond the Ches Light Tower, which is more like 10 NM off shore. 99 plus percent of the time, you are out of luck for signal at the 20 Fm line.
Their story was more amazing since one guy's wife went into to labor that day. The Coast Guard contacted the boat by VHF, and they started heading in. He ended up hearing the birth of his child on the cell phone on the way in!
I have called 42 miles with my bag phone and a GAM antenna from the area of the Big Rock. 42 miles with a VHF, thats a reach.
