Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
I would really like to know which ones are better on fuel. I am shipping a boat to Maui that is currently powered by twin Yamaha 225's. There is no Yamaha dealer on Maui, so service is available only because Mercury sold the same motors and there is a Mercury dealer on the island. There is a Honda Dealer, so service for Honda is not a problem. Fuel on Maui is running about $3.80 per gallon. OK, I know there are other brands and options, like Verados, Suzuki and Evinrude, but I'm asking about Yamaha and Honda. Has anyone run the different motors on the same hull?
Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
Both motors should be very close in MPG.
and both are awesome motors but with the Honda service there I would go with the Hondas.

I can get Yamaha service, because the dealer who sells Mercury, Honda and Suzuki is also a Yamaha service center. But fuel is the question. It is expensive!
Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
I think my Honda gets better MPG than any body I have ran with.
Keep in mind there are a lot of variables to deal with in the " boat motor " combination.
I went with the max HP for my boat at the time and a high rake prop. that gives me right at 5 mpg at cruse 3000 to 3200rpms and about 30 mph.
I'm not making this up other THT'rs have seen this and a fishing guide down in Port O'Connor that ran my boat all day and used less than a 1/4 tank [ I hold 114 gallons ] never shut the motor off.
I have been out up to 14 hours and have not used over a 1/4 tank, I was filling the tank with 5 gallon cans and the gauge is very accurate[ that was in florida and I took warthog5 out for 3 hours and the gauge almost didnt move.

Hi,
Found a test on Yamaha F225, Honda BF225 (plus Mercury 225 Optimax and Evinrude Ficht 225) from 2003 in a Swedish boat magazine.
It was a singel engine test on a White Shark 236 boat.

Bossee: That's exactly what I was looking for!!!
Welder: 5 NMPG? That's almost disgusting! I can only wish. How big do they make those boats?
B-Faithful: It is all one service department and "warm and fuzzy" is really not appropriate. Need something fixed? Average appointment time is 2 months. In all seriousness, I bought and own both the Honda and Yamaha service manuals so I could see how clear they were and how much of the service I could do myself. Having owned Hondas, I am really good at the various fuel screens since our fuel is 87 percent gasoline, 10 percent ethanol, 2 percent water and 1 percent sand and rust. I put brand new tanks in my last boat and after 6 months, the amount of debris floating around in them was scary. It was before ethanol and the debris looks like sand.

the honda will get you a little better milage .there have been several 225 test & honda is always at or near the top.with honda having service there you have the best of both worlds. motorboat did a 225 test a few years ago & the honda got better mpg than the yammie . good luck
Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
Welder: What prop are you running on your Bf 225 Honda. I'm running a power Tech 15 1/4 X 17 Pitch 4 blade on my Triton 220LTS with the BF 225 Honda. Just curious about your prop. I'm thinking about trying a 3 blade 19 pitch powertech for better fuel mileage at cruise. Thanks Rangerman
Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
Rangerman,
Honda's 14 3/4 X 18 3 blade ss
It does keep me down around 5300 / 5400 rpm's , I would like to try that in a 17

Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
Welder: Thanks. I'm turning about 6000RPM at WOT with the powertech 4 blade with the motor all trim out. At 40 MPH cruise , I'm turning 4800RPM's. I'd like to lower my rpm's at cruise and maybe increase the mph and fuel mileage at cruise and WOT. Think I'm going to try the powertech 15 1/4 X 19 Pitch 3 blade OFS and see what happens. Thanks Rangerman
Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
Operating rpms are 5000 to 6000 , I would like about 3 to500 more.
Most bf225's on my boat run 14 X 17 3 blade Al

Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
You've already got the Yamaha's? No brainer, keep 'em. The cost of changing them out will never be paid for even if the Honda's get considerably better mileage. Your service situation doesn't favor either motor either . . . keep the Yammi's (and I'm a Honda guy).
Re: Honda 225 vs. Yamaha 225 fuel usage. Anybody know which is best?
That is an excellent graph. Exactly what I saw on my Honda powered Regulator 21. Pay close attention to what happens to the Honda fuel economy at speeds over 35 on this particular boat. The Honda is the economy champ at idle/low speeds but does not do that well over 4500 rpms where two things happen; 1. VTEC kicks in and you begin to run on a higher lift cam profile and (2) the air induction path changes to allow more intake air. If I had one complaint about my Honda is was that after 4500 everthing changes, it gets much louder and burns a lot more fuel. I would still buy one as my next OB any day but just be aware that they really shine from idle to 4400 rpms.
If you do a alot of slow-mid range , especially slow trolling operations the Honda is a great choice for economy. If you run over 4400 rpms, Honda economy goes WAY down.

Yes this is spot on, but there is no rpm data and if one motor is not turning fast enough with too large a prop, that would kill the milage, right?
