I'm thinking about buying a 1765 DLX Carolina Skiff, but having second thoughts. I'm hearing that they'll beat you to death in choppy water. For about $4000 more, I can get the v hull, but that would be more than what I planned on spending. Anybody know anything about these boats?
RE: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
You need to get out in a Carolina Skiff and determine whether or not it is what you are looking for. They make great boats with very stable, fishable layouts. BUT, if you are not looking for a shallow water, back water fishing boat that does pound pretty hard in the slop, then you will be very disappointed.
Its a great boat that I have fished the ICW in many times. Just make sure to get out and ride in one (and spend a few minutes at the helm), before you buy.
RE: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
I used to have a 16'er... actually mine was the International Skimmer. They do beat you up a little in the chop. However... it is a very stable boat with alot of fishing space for it's size. It's easy for the family to maneuver around without the boat rocking back & forth. I used to use mine in the inland bays & tributaries for crabbing and trolling for flounder. I loved it. Some *%(*&*(%& stole it.
Re: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
yep, used to have a 16. was the Perfect boat for what I was doing at the time (all flats fishing and camping in Cocoa Beach area). Could float in literally ankle deep water, was unsinkable, totally no frills boat, use it, spray it down, done. Stable platform for fishing or carrying gear. Yes, it was a wet ride in the chop, but I dealt with it on the rare occasion that I wasn't on the flats.
Re: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
Rough as can be, takes some water over the bow if not properly trimmed out, but that can be said for every flat bottom boat on the market. Mine was stored outside and not used this fall (Florida football takes priority to fishing) but in December I took the pressure washer to it and within ten minutes had it looking brand new. Very durable, simple boat, if that's what your in the market for it's great. If your looking for comfort or luxury probably look elsewhere and expect to pay more. I like the boat a lot for what it is.
Re: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
Thanks for the info guys. I think it will be the right boat for me. I spend about 75% of my boating time in small lakes and rivers. And the other 25% is in the jettys. What I was concerned mostly about was on the rare occasions where I take it outside the jetties to troll for spanish.
RE: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
I am on my 2nd Car.Skiff. I agree with the other posters. If your doing inshore and shallow water fishing it's hard to beat. I might add they hold their resale value very well.
RE: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
I forgot to mention that you will never have a problem getting out of that boat if you need to. It will sell in a heartbeat and you won't take a beating. Also, a small Honda or Zuk 4 stroke will move it just fine.
Re: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
I had a 1765 semi vee with a 55hp Yamaha.
First thing they are very rough and they will also wet you, BAD, BAD, BAD.
Now the new DLXs are suppose to have a anti spray chine of some sort on the front end, mine didn't.
If'n I was you I would get the less expensive DLX rather than the more costly semi-vee. One other thing, they take more HP than CS would like to tell you, so max out the HP.

I've gotta agree.....The splash guards work like a charm on my 24DLX in anything up to a 25mph side wind, and depending on conditions have still remained dry. Most of those who have spent time in each say the new DLX's do ride better/drier than the Semi-V. Now the new DLV is a different story all together.
The comment on re-sale is also very accurate, I was in the market about a year and a half ago, spent months looking for a used CS and finally came to the conclusion I could buy a new one for about $1000 more than a good used one, and purchased new. Check out Chatlee Marine, Sams, Quimby's, and Ed's. Also check out the CS owners group over at MSN (just google Carolina Skiff Owners and it will be one of the first results) for much more usefull information, I joined about a year before I purchased my CS (its free).
RE: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
Now, a day before i was going to leave a deposit on my 1765 im having second thoughts on weather i should just buy the 1780.
Let me get you up to speed
Just before i sold my 16 foot glasstron-carlson CV-16 I mounted a 04 Yamaha 20" 4 stroke tiller on it and went for a test ride. If memory serves it pushed around 25-26 mph on my GPS and didnt take too much to get on plane, about 14 mph. That hull was around 900lbs and had a really deep v and was very bow light.
That taken into consideration, the 1765 and the 1780 both are lighter and are both Flat bottom. One is 65" at the beam marked from the chines the other is 80". They weigh 750 and 800lbs respectably. being that they are flat bottom they should get on plane at a very low speed. I'm wondering if anyone thinks there would be an issue with pushing 3 people at 600 lbs total with the 1765 or 1780 hull and motor with only a bench in the boat, no console or deck. so they might even be lighter then 750-800 lbs.
RE: Carolina-Skiff 1765 DLX.....To buy or not to buy?
Fuel economy and light weight are king as i will be using this boat in the Delaware chasing stripers in 1-3 foot of water over rocks.
It will also serve as my bay and inlet boat, with the occasional trip outside
gunnel height is around 32" for the 1765 and 35" for the 1780

Ditto
To run around the back bays, over a 10 year period; I had a 1655 w/25 2 stroke. 1765 w/60 johnrude, 1980 semi vee w/112 johnrude. They were WET WET WET they pound the sh!t out of you. I highly recommend taking your money and finding a used something else.

Master-Baiter,
I had a CS 1765 for four years and really enjoyed the boat.I used mine in the rivers and around the inlets and on nice days I took out 3-4 miles into the Chesapeake Bay. Never did I feel unsafe. Sounds to me it will be perfect for what you plan on using it for. Pick your days if you plan on taking it outside the jetty's because they do have limitations.

BaitWaster - 2/18/2008 8:29 AM If you get one, call it The Rented Mule. If you get in any kind of chop you'll feel like you were beaten like one.
Just ried to find pix of my friends 16 CS w/F25.. He sold it with about 10 hours on it, he expected it to run like the one I had with a 25 JohnRude, it would barely plane... His was called 'Soaker'
