Default Are Luhrs boats still good?

My dad use to have an old 32ft Luhrs back in the 80's and I remember it to be a tank. It turns out 20 years later I docked my boat right next to my dads old boat. I only recognized it becasue it still had the extra cleats that we installed on the boat 20 years ago. There are no stress cracks and the boat still looks great. Back then Luhrs(70's) was top of the line.
Well, I was at the boat show looking(just looking) at the new 32ft Luhrs express model for about 160k with twin diesels. The boat looked beautiful and the layout was fabulous. However, when I got a little closer I realized the fiberglass was very light and did not seem solid. The entire boat seemed cheap. I asked the salesperson if the boat has flotation and his response was boats of this size dont have flotation and in his twenty years with Luhrs he never heard of one sinking(Thats got to be a load of crap).
I figured they can make-up for the cheap glass by addding flotation but I Was wrong.
But, I must say, the boat is absolutely beautiful.

You will hear good and bad...are they finished like Albemarles or Carolina Classics...NO. Are they tough, YES. I've fished offshore in a 32 Express twin Yanmars (mid 90's vintage I think) probably a dozen times (or more) in the past 3 years and overall, the thing is solid when it is rough. It also trolls well in slop and for us, has been a fish raiser. I HATE the fishbox (way too small) and I think they should have a big-a$$ one in the deck along with the pathetically small one in the transom.

I've seen some of the new 32's and I like them a lot. The molded in windshield is very nice compared to the older ones and to me, they are a nice compromise between a true top tier boat (that you pay top dollar for) and a bit lower tier boat that is still very solid and looks good.

We have a 1989 Luhrs. The 32' convertible model. Itís got gas guzzling 454 crusaders in it. From a hull fiberglass standpoint the boats in GREAT shape. But I must say its time for a overhaul. It needs new engines, the wiring needs to be redone, it needs new windshields. My point is that itís all cosmetic stuff.

For a production boat its great. You are right about the new one though - the parts used are a little cheap.

160K.........Try Again.......Their 28 footer with diesels is considerably more than that..........As far as "built like a tank" goes......there were a few other builders from the 70s that can claim that like Bertram and Blackfin but Luhrs??????? They are a production built boat today that in their size class would be rated near the bottom...........Honestly, I don't know what boat would be rated worse?????????? I know their are lots of satisfied Luhrs owners and I almost bought one myself until it failed the survey miserably....................................We all can't afford CABOs.....so Luhrs will always have a following......

To offshorebri. I was at the NY boat show and they had the 32 offshore express for 159k(gas) and 179k with diesels. I was off 20k. I forgot the 20k upgrade.
There were no other boats of this size for that cheap other then the 27ft baha for 50k.
I am assuming they sold alot of boats just on looks alone.

I saw the 28 foot one at the norwich boat show.. It was brand new and it looked like a 10 yr old boat. dirty ok I understand but the finishing touches were so awful. Silicone was sloppy and the whole thing looked like crap.. This is the things you see now imagine what you don't see...

used to be good boats from what I heard.

You better go see an eye doctor.........Go check boat trader.....There are several a few years old selling for 250 Grand?????

Clarks Landing in NJ had one at the NY boat show asking $314,000.00 with 380 Yanmars and they have a 2007 used one (believe it or not) nicely rigged with an asking price of $380,000.00

So for 179, you should get 2, one for you and one for your wife????????????

Do some more homework....................

Lately I'm seeing more Luhrs showing up in charter fleets. I don't know if this is a new trend, because Gamefishers have been the preferred west coast boats. My experience with Luhrs dates back to the 70's in the Great Lakes. Many were used as charter boats. Quality at that time was never a problem.

The more I think about it, I wonder what brand most people think is the bottom of the line low to mid 30 foot express style boats....

What are the comparable boats in the mid 30 ft range - at least for the convertibles? The big boys have left this market behind

I am looking to purchase the Luhrs 28 open with twin Yanmar diesels. I have heard there are hull problems with regard to water infiltration. Any feedback would be appreciated.

we fish a 32 open. For the price you can't beat it imo. We go out in rough seas all the time and she handles great. We made a few mods to make it more fishing friendly such as rod holders, bait well mod, etc.

Luhrs is a Luhrs is a Luhrs............ period. An entry level fishing platform. As long as you always remember that you get what you pay for, and that a Luhrs is not a Blackfin, Black Watch, Bertram, Henriques, Delta SFX, or the like then you will never be dis-satisfied. When I say this, I am specifically talking about the under 40' models. The Luhrs 32 Express is and has been a very good boat in performance, value, fishability and interior accomodations, WITH DIESEL power unless the trip to the fishing grounds is less than 15 or 20 miles.
