Grady-White is releasing a new dual console 27' family fishing boat this week at the NY boat show. It is being sold with twin Yamaha 150s, but you are able to upgrade to the max rating of 500hp. The performance data is respectable with the twin 150s, but I would like to upgrade to the twin Yamaha 250 four strokes. The GW 273 Chase CC has twin 225s or 250s and is the same hull. I had a GW Tournament 225 with a Yamaha 225 four stroke and it felt weak with a full load. Is 500hp too much for a 27' hull?
No such thing as too much HP. Just too much throttle application.
I agree, but there can be too much weight on the transom in regards to structural strength and / or performance. My guess is that this new model has the strength, but I don't know how the balance of the boat would be affected by the heavier motors.
I think it would be fine with twin 250 2 Strokes....the Yamaha F250's may create a weight problem.....keep in mind,. the twin 150 yammies are 4 cylinder and alot less weight than their V6 counterparts.
The twin F250s have these specs; 1916 lbs, optimal cruise 30.6 mph @ 3500 rpm with 2.19 mpg vs. the twin 150s at 1590lbs, 29.2 mph @ 4100 rpm with 2.2 mpg. I would think 200 hp extra would make up for the 326 extra lbs. Right?
The power vs. weight is not what you need to be worried about. The concern would be the dead weight of the larger motors pushing the transom farther into the water when at rest. Having said that, I can't imagine that a 27 foot Grady would not be able to handle those motors just fine, but I'm not a Grady dealer or rep either. So......... you would be best to ask one of them.

In terms that may be better
You can buy a mustang with a 6 cyl that will be fun and get the job done or you can buy a gt500 mustang that has the same % more hp and have that much more fun
Yeah, I'm thinking this was a stupid question to put in a thread. You're right, you can't go wrong with more horsepower. Especially if a storm cell is brewing!
I won't argue with those who say you can never have too much HP. But you can have enough...
Our 2002 Islander 270 has the same hull. We purchased it new with a single 250HP OX66, used it for 3-1/2 years, and put on 465 hours. We repowered to twin F150s 14 months ago, and have 340 hours on them already.
With full fuel, water, five people, 200# ice, and all our offshore gear, we can cruise at 28knots at 1.75nmpg. WOT with that load is 37kts. That is enough for me.
The Islander with twin F225s was supposed to hit 54mph, so imagine the F250s would give more.
Our boat sat a bit bow down with the single, and now sits "just right". With F225s or 250s, the cockpit drain scuppers would be submerged at rest, with no one onboard. I think it would be worse with the new 273, without as much weight forward as the WA.
I think I would opt for twin 200's on this hull. Was aboard the model they had at the NYC show. Nice rig. It's like a Tournament 225 on steroids! The hull they had at the show, according to the rep, was hull #1. Not a prototype--I asked--but just the first one rolled off the line. They are tooled up and taking orders and are in production. The boat had a roomy head, plenty of storage, ice chests, etc. I noted the inside of the hatches were gelcoated and that the the bow cleats were retractable. The helm is very roomy and comfortable, and the the bow seating area has a table that is removable, and can also be used in the cockpit for dining. Was just a bit surprised it did not have a few inches more beam--it's 8'6"--but looks to be a winner as far as large DC's are concerned. Good luck if you get one.
