Default Chevy Trailblazer for Towing???

I know this towing questions bet beat to death but I would appreciate any input.
I have a 99 210cc Sea Pro (with ttop) and I always tow it with my Z71. My wife has a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer(2wd) and I was considering using it to tow my boat to the beach this year(about 200 miles). My big concern it the 6 cylinder engine, it actually has 270 hp, and how well it would be for this distance.
Has anyone ever used one of these for towing. I am going to pull my boat tomorrow to the local lake(about 3 miles) but I am more concerned with a long distance tow.

It's not so much the engine that's the problem as it is the transmission. I have a friend that works as a technician in a Chev dealership. He does all the tranny work. He told me that the trannys on anything but the full size vehicles just weren't adequate for towing anything heavy. I was looking for a new tow vehicle when we had this conversation. If it's just a one shot deal (and the vehicle is still under warranty), I'd personally probably do it.

Let me add that I use an alluminum tandem axl trailer. Also it will just be an occasional thing as most of the other times the towing will be with my Z71.

I trail my 20' Hydrasport only a few miles with my 2001 Blazer and it is kinda like sliding a 1/2 filled milk container accrossed a table. The boat is in control. It can be done. Just not without the white knuckles.

I tow with a trailblazer ext and feel like I am in control. Grades are not fun but if you are not in a hurry the truck can pull fine and stop without a problem.

'price,

I think you already know that towing the boat with the smaller vehicle is marginal. You can probably get it done, but be careful. The shorter wheelbase will make it difficult to control. You also need to pay attention to what's going on around and anticipate situations where you may need to brake early.

A couple of things you can do to mitigate the heat that will build up in the drive train:

First: Install a transmission oil cooler. Relatively inexpensive. Towing generates a lot of heat. The cooler will reduce that and keep the fuild from cooking.

Second: Install a heavy duty radiator on the Trailblazer if it doesn't already have on. Your larger truck has one I'll bet.

Good Luck,

Does your Trailblazer have the towing package? If so, you should be ok because your towed weight shouldn't be more than 4500-5000 lbs, right? That is well within the capacity of the vehicle.

This may be a dumb question but how do I know if it has the towing package(don't know what we did with the invoice). The only thing i would know to look for would be a Transmission cooler or oil cooler. It did come with the Reese hitch and light plug in already installed.

I have a TrailBlazer EXT and tow my 22' Regal with no problems. The TrailBlazer does come standard with a tow package. Class V hitch, bigger alternator, bigger oil pan(7 quarts), additional tranny cooler, but I am going to add another one to mine(cheap insurance), and a 7 pin wiring harness.

You should be ok towing the boat, but I would recommend installing another tranny cooler, about $80 if you do it yourself.

I have the older Blazer 1999 with the 190hp V6 and tow my 24ft Hydrasport (1981) with a 225hp motor. Tows fine, but I do have a shift kit and an extra transmission cooler. With the newer trailblazer you can tow a 21ft Seapro fully loaded and wet all day and not blink an eye.

I sureley doubt this statement!!!! I have a '98 Tahoe (full size) that has a GVW of 6800 lbs. Don't forget , guys, that you need to deduct the weight of the tow vehicle from the GVW, and what weight is left, you MAY be able to tow. Like I said in a post above, my friend from the CHEV dealership advises against it, and he does all their trans overhauls. In the end, it will be your decision and you will have to live with it.

I tow a 17' boat with the Trailblazer and I have not had any problems. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the Trailblazer was rated the best SUV for towing (or something to that effect) in a recent boating magazine.

I have a 4 wheel drive. The 2 wheel may present problems if the launch ramp is steep.

Take a real close look at the fine print on that figure...

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic that has a "5000# tow rating". Of course, that 5000#'s (in the fine print) is for use with an equalizing hitch.

When using the more common load bearing hitch, the rating on this vehicle is only 2000#'s, and yes... I have the 'factory tow package'.

Default Chevy Trailblazer for Towing???

As shown by the information Strikerthree posted, you should be ok towing with that Traillazer so long as you have the transmission cooler as your towed load isn't likely to exceed the maximum regardless of what rear axle ratio you have. The question is whether your boat/motor/trailer weighs more than 4,000 lbs, in which case you will need a weight equalizing hitch (it distributes the weight over the frame of the tow vehicle rather than just concentrating it at the rear). This is a safety issue (vehicle handling while towing) so make sure to weigh your towed load if you think you don't need to use a weight distributing hitch.

The other towing factor alluded to in the posts is that the combined weight of the Trailblazer, towing load, and all people and equipment in the Trailblazer and boat shouldn't exceed the GCVR, which Strikierthree lists as 10,000 lbs.
