Default Gelcoat repair for a Grady White. HELP!!!!!!

I have a 1991 Grady White 22' Tournament and I need to repair some minor gelcoat cracks, holes etc. Where can I get gel coat to closely match my existing color of gelcoat? Is it only available through Grady White? I know it will not be exact as the existing has faded considerably but any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I will be posting pictures of my finished project soon. Also, I have never repaired gelcoat, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch, Joey

The Grady dealer carries spectrum brand to match your gel coat. Do a search on the forum and you will get lots of results. If you want to be really anal there are companies that will match your gelcoat exactly. Just send them a piece (hatch, panel, etc...) of your boat and they run a computer sample. I used the spectrum on my 98 and you couldn't find the spots.

Or,you can buy some evercoat gelcoat at any marine store and also buy some black tint. The trick is,put some in a contanier, about the amount you will need.Add the tint, just a very very small bit at a time.Take a stick and put it next to the place were the repair is to be.Leave it there and add tint till you match up,by putting drops next to each other. After you have a match, clean up everything with acetone and let it dry. From there add the MEK hardner and fill in the hole. Now for a trick. You know those plastic folders, the clear ones that kids use for book reports?Cut one of them to over lap at least 3" around the repair.Flare out the gelcoat as good as you can, then apply the plastic over and rub it out till its even and let it dry.Just peel it off after. That will save you alot of time from sanding.
Evercoat gelcoat already has wax added to it and it will dry without covering it from air once the hardner is added.

you would have a hard time matching a grady white color with just black tint.

Grady's lose alot of thier color, then when you sand them the color comes back- so now which color do you match, very aggrevating with those off-white colors. Unless the boat is new every Grady I come across ( at least 6 a year ) is a different shade then the other

I'm in the same boat as the OP, no pun intended.

My cracks are really narrow and not very deep. How can I get the gel coat to penetrate such shallow and narrow scratches/cracks?

Where are you? That would help? I know of a fiberglass and resin supplier in south jersey that for 75 buckuroos will give you a gallon of your gelcoat matched perfectly. You just have to take a small piece of gelcoat to him to spectra analyze. It even matches to the sun damage? I am sure he is not the only one doing this?
