Default 1996 Yamaha Saltwater Series TRIM NOISE

I have a problem on trim with this motor. I bought the boat used in 1999 and discovered an annoying problem. If I down trim the engine when running over 25 MPH the unit squeels. Going up no issue or at low speed. I am confident it is hydraulics(likly valves). Anybody ever had the problem?

Do you keep a good coating of marine grease on the tops of the rods and in the cups they fit in to?

Yes motor is lubed well. Mechanic thinks it is valves but says it woould cost a bunch to locate the faulty valve so his recommendation is wait till it craps out and then tear into it. Just need some advise if anyone else has ever seen the problem. Other that this noisy issue motor operates fine

My last yamaha made hellashest noise while trimming. Found out all this motor wanted was excessive amounts of grease in the fittings and the rod tops. I'd make sure you grease all the fittings vey well.

sej,

I also had a similar problem with my Yammie trim. I asked my mechanic about it and he said the loud squeaking/screeching is usually caused by low fluid in the motor. When I opened up the fitting on my trim motor, it let out a hissing noise from the air escaping out of it. It wasn't low on fluid so I screwed the fitting back in. Needless to say it hasn't made that noise since.

Hope this helps. Let us know the outcome.

I have the same engine, bought new in 1997. Squeeled from day one when trimming in on the trailer, and squeeled/grunted when trimming in under way. Dealer replaced the entire hydraulic trim under warranty after about a year. Still makes the exact same noise. I ignore it.

Mine is a 96 200 SWS and it makes the noise when trimming down at speed. Has done it since day one. No noise when trimming up. It is a funny noise but I just ignore it.

MAN SURE IS A LOT OF CASH TO FORK OUT JUST TO IGNORE IT. You would think YAMAHA could do better than that! Thanks for your advise. I will try all the ideas and if none of them work I will ignore it. My boat is at Scout getting hull redone I may ask Scout to ask the factory rep from YAMAHA

been there and done that- try the grease method as noted above- it will fix it. Grease rod tips (not shafts) and the cup it goes into- use a waterproof grease.
