Default Yamaha controls with OMC/BRP cables?

Does anyone know if Yamaha controls will work with OMC throttle cables? As most of you know my father in law has tripple Yamahas and just so happens to have a brand new dual control that I can have. I figured it would be nicer than my old OMC controls and I don't feel like spending 700 bucks on new BRP controls right now.

Chris,

Yamaha uses standard MorseTeleflex push-pull cables. I think OMC used to cables that were specific to them. On the newer engines I have no clue.

The short answer is yes. Before I repowered I had twin Johnson outboards and I really disliked my OMC controls. My mechanic said he could hook me up with some Yamaha controls, but I decided to put up with the OMC's till my repower. Somehow there is some connector that has to be changed or modified, but that it can be done for sure.

That is correct! Chris ... use the Yam binnacle and buy Teleflex Xtreme cables with the OMC/Bomb adaptor (There are 2, pre and post '92 I believe). www.surplusunlimited.com has good prices on the cables.

Xtreme cables are de balls!

Cool, thats what I wanted to hear. What I like the most is the single switch to trim both engines which should be no problem to integrate in to the BRP system. I guess will have to change the cables.

This is the unit he is giving me. He bought this and a single to control the three engines.

But then he saw this before he had a chance to even use them. So he broke down and spent the 2500 bucks on this tripple control.

I say no problem...that leaves me with a brand new dual control. Maybe he will give me the single also and I can get a couple hundred bucks on ebay for it.

Why don't you just use the newest BRP controls. They Just came out this month. I've seen the box & it looks like it is made very well. It has that single switch as well.

I'm not sure if the throttle & shift cables go the same direction. Push/pull or pull/push. I would half to check. The old OMC box was universal so it did work with yamaha. I do know the new box works with yamaha as well because of the test setup BRP had With The E-TEC & Yamaha powered boat.

If the yamaha box was FREE see if it would work. I think you said he was giving it to you. I believe the shift throw for BRP is 1.45 or so in both directions But I would also have to confirm that as well.

I saw the new BRP controls at the boat show and I like them, but like I said in my first post I don't want to spend 700 bucks to replace something that works. I'm getting the brand new Yamaha controls for free. I can just put a BRP or Scarab sticker over the Yahaha logo.

IF it takes some kind of adapter to make the Yamaha controls work with your existing cables, I'd at least find a dealer that sells both Yamaha and BRP for repowers and see what kind of credit they would give you on the "new" Yamaha control against buying the new BRP controls - or Ebay / THT trading dock sell the Yamaha controls (and the "nice" BRP controls you have now - I have them too...so I know how "nice" they are ). If it were me and I could get wihin $150 overall cost wise and end up with the new BRP controls that is the way I'd go... I'm hoping to see some kind of promo from BRP on the new controls but that is probally just wishful thinking.

The Adaptor is just an end that goes onto the 33C cable, I believe it will cost you about $15. The new BRP controls are identical to the Yamaha controls except for the cable attachment because the end on the BRP Cables is different than what Yamaha uses.
