Default Is ther a Diff. between 15-40w Oil when using it for a Diesel engine ??

I am changing the oil on my single diesel engine and have noticed one case of Rotella oil 15-40w reads " Low Soot ", the other 2 cases of Penzol 15-40w oil I used when changing oil in 2 big Crusader 8.1L, 502,425hp gas motors. Seems like the formulation isn't exactly the same. I am not mixing the 2 brands, just looking for a clarification.
Thanks

Different agents (additives) and properties of the two oils.
I think the diesel oils have a highter shearing rate due to the higher pressures exerted on the oil.
I've really never read into the technical side of things.

Use oils only formulated for Diesel applications. They're different formulas and additives. (I forget the API Codes for each but you can look it up if you like.)

Oils with a "C" rating (e.g. CI-4, etc) have the ability to suspend soot, where gas rated (Sx ratings) do not.

Its a VERY important difference; do not run a non-diesel rated oil in a diesel!

Most diesel oils are also rated for spark-ignition, but the converse is NOT true.

SH or SJ for gasoline engines
CF for off-highway IDI diesels
CG for on-highway IDI diesels
CF-2 for two-stroke diesels
CF-4 or CG-4 for high-speed four-stroke diesels

Diesel oils are also rated for turbo's as stated do not use non diesel oils .If your going to use dino oils rotella is the only one I would use.

Well, what would be your first choice? There are not alot of choices in oils for diesels near me. My only choices are Rotella, the Wal-Mart brand and there is another choice I cannot remember. At a local ship store, I can get Kendall for $12 a gallon, ridiculous.

It seems that it has not dawned on anyone that gasoline has decreased in price, diesel a little but oil hasn't dropped a penney.

According to the folks in the industry, the phosphorus content in oils has declined steadily in response to emissions requirements. Many camshaft manufactureres, like Crane and Comp Cams, have reported a serious increas in the failure rate of solid lifter camshafts because the high pressure lubricity of the oil has declined as the phosporus has been removed. One oil in the marketplace continues to have the pre-emissions additive levels because it is marketed as a diesel oil rather than a gasoline engine oi. I don't have any stake in Shell or Rotella, but I can tell you that it is what I run in all of my street engines that do not specify synthetics. Call me old fashioned, but I continue to prefer the dino oils for everyday usage.

We do alot of r&d on our race motors at Roush Racing. When I asked what oil they use in breakin they said only diesel grade oil .They do alot of oil testing and found that the diesel grade oils are way better than automotive type oils in many ways.I asked what grade or make and I was told it didnt matter .Its the only non synthetic used in their race motors...

Try a heavy truck dealer. For instance Tom Nehl in Jax. I like Mobil Delvac. Chevron Delo. Cat and Detroit both have private label oil, Detroits is made by Mobil I am not a big fan of Rotella but they do market it well.

Ditto for Mobil Delvac 1300 and Chevron Delo 400. Both outstanding oils. Cat oil is Mobil repackaged. Lots of oil information at http://bobistheoilguy.com

The new spec diesel oils are to be used with EGR/Cat type engines. Diesel fuel had quite a bit of sulfer in the fuel and a high TBN formula was used in the past to combat the acids and byproducts from the combustion process.

The new oils are good, but the hours run between oil changes have just about been cut in half. In pre-07 engines run the older spec oils. Most diesel fuel now is Ultra low sulfer fuel and you also will need a good fuel conditioner to lube the pump and injectors.

Depending on the climate you run your boat engine, a straight weight works fine. Diesel oils are not created equal anymore. You can run the diesel oil in your gas engines too without any problems.

Amsoil makes a new 5w40 diesel oil for new 2007 up diesel engines. They also make a straight 30 weight that meets 10w30 specs. They also have a blend 15w40 and a full synthetic 15w40 oil. I would run the 15-40 AME Diesel and Marine oil in both your gas and diesel engines.....you can purchase in gallons, 2.5 gallon jugs, 30 gallon drum or 55 gallon drum. Check out my profile for info.

What good is a post that doesn't state why or what is your first choice? Mobil Delvac and Cheron Delo are both fine oils. So is Rotella as far as I am concerned. All of these "fleet" marketed oils have superior additive packages compared to regular automotive oils. I use them in all applications where the viscosity available matches my needs.

I always used what the manual said - and I shortened the intervals

Shortening the intervals does not make up for the lack of high pressure lubricants that were a"EPA'd" out. Run a diesel oil, like Rotella or Delo in what ever grade you'd like along with a real (not Fram) oil filter and you have the best chance at having a happy engine.
