Default 90 HP 4- Stroke Johnson with EFI or 4- Stroke Yamaha with carbs?

It has now come down to this. What would you do between these 2 motors? Don't forget the John is a Suzuki.

Well oracoke, I have had 2 4/str carb engines, yam and merc, and now a efi 115/4 merc.
The difference in starting is amazing one click and the efi goes without pumping the primer ball and shoking??.
That is the main advantage I can think of, but if I'm right the john/suzi has a oil bath chain thing??? that need no adjustments, and no rubber belt.
Well some body will say some more technical things but I will go for the EFI.

greetings from holland

i have the F100 (carb'd) which was detuned for the F90- it runs smoothly, quietly, and faithfully

in three years only regular maintenance (oil/filter/lower unit/water pump)

i have no idea how or why it works, only that it does

I would pick the John/Suzuki. These motors have a timing chain that runs in the oil bath and have a higher alt. output. It swings a bigger prop too.

The Yamaha has a timing belt that is not a freewheel motor. What that means is if the timing belt breaks or strips some cogs off the belt, the pistons will colide with the valves.

Would not the same thing happen with the chain too?

Timing chain's don't break. At least in my 30+ years of auto experiance. The timing gears can wear out, especially if they have a nylon coating over the teeth. They can strech. I pretty sure that the Suzuki has a idler on the chain to take up any strech.
Timing belts by their nature can rot. My brother had one on his old truck [2.0L Ranger] That I was able to grab with both hands and tear it in half. It had 80K miles on it.
