Default OX66 rough idle / smoking problem

I have an '00 225hp Yamaha OX66 that has been starting & running without any problems. When I went to start it early this morning I was unable to start the engine without opening the throttle. After running the engine for several minutes I put the throttle back in idle position and it ran very rough for several seconds and then shut off. There also seemed to be more smoke coming from the engine that usual.

I changed the plugs and cleaned the O2 sensor with some improvement but its still not starting/running the same as last weekend. When the primer bulb is pumped the smoke is reduced and the engine will choke down if squeezed long enough.

Should I replace the 3 low pressure fuel pumps? Any guidance is appreciated.

I would check all the usual suspects like low pressure pumps, fuel filters, caps... but it sounds like you need to replace the pumps. I would do it if it has been a while.

Suncoug is right on, low pressure fuel pump and fuel filter. I would say fuel pump

What is the cause of the decrease in smoke when the primer bulb is pumped? I can understand why the engine would run smoother when the bulb is pumped if it isn't receiving enough fuel but how does this reduce the amount of smoke? Also, could the colder weather affect this problem? The engine seemed to be OK last weekend when the temperature was in the 70s. Yesterday when I tried to start the engine the temperature was in the mid 40s.

The smoke is reduced because the fuel/oil ratio is becoming more correct. You are still pumping the same amount of oil but gasoline is reduced when not squeezing the bulb.

start with the basics.. clean 02 sensor.. plugs, filter, high pressure pump screen, then fuel pumps, i changed my pumps this past summer and there's nothing to it.. probably cost about 120 bucks for all three.. was haveing rough idle problems along with wot problems.. Has not missed a beat since the new pumps.........GOOD LUCK

The oil pump pumps the required oil into the VST( (vapor separator tank),. It is on the port side of the engine. The location can be found by the fuel and oil lines termination. The high pressure pump needed to supply the injectors is located in the VST. The VST is supplied by the three mechanical pumps and the oil pump. It seems that the mechanical pumps are not supplying the needed fuel to this tank, oil still is flowing at the ratio rate setup by the oil pump. Yet the high pressure pump is supplying the injectors with an over rich oil mixture. Hence the reason why you are smoking more, as one previous posted has stated your ratio is way rich on the oil side. Another reason why you are stalling is the high pressure pump runs out of fuel. So from the symptom you have stated you are not supplying enough fuel. Check from the VST backward. You may also want to check the VST itself. The mechanical fuel pumps feed this tank through a needle and seat arrangement, much the same as in a carburetor. If this needle gets hung up it could cause the resistance to the flow. The only way to check this is to pull the top of the VST off. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your input. I've ordered the fuel pumps and thermostats also for good measure. Hopefully this will cure the problems.

KevinM,

Any idea why there are 6 separate lines coming off the oil pump that meet up into a single line again before they hit the VST?

Is the oil pump just a leftover part from the pre-OX66 motors?

I am going to take a wild ass guess. The carbed models injected oil behind the carb plates on both sides providing 6 inlets. the OX66 uses all six lines to a common point at the VST, the HPDI uses all 6 lines behind the throttle plate on both sides.
Even though the first three numerics of the pn for the pumps are different between useages ( 62J-13200-00-00, 65L-13200-00-00, 60V-13200-00-00) the base numer is the same. I am guessing ther is some commonality between pumps.
The reason for the six outlets into the VST is to provide the correct ratios thru one common point into the VST, whereas in the other models, 2 lines inject behind the throttle plate or carb plate providing the correct ratio per throttle position, with an overall correct ratio. So one would think by using some common parts to get to the same ratio requirement, that some of the pump was left intack with only some minor differences engineered to meet the requirement of a specific engine. Engineering saving money.

It's only my guess, but I have seen it done alot.

Changed the low pressure fuel pumps and all the problems cleared right up. Really easy fix -- about 30 minutes and no excessive smoking and a nice, smooth idle. Thanks for everyone's help.

make sure you order new gaskets for the back side of the fuel pumps, it looks like they were also numbered incorrectly in the above diagram
