Default Aluminum Bay and River Boat

What's your opinion on the aluminum boats wit hthe elevated platforms in the back and front that accomadate a fishing chair? Is it wasted space for river( saltwater) and bay use/Or could it come in handy/ Anyone have any experiences with these?

My aluminum bass boat had the casting decks with pedestal chairs. Really great for quiet lakes. However a 16 would just be too small for the bays I've seen.

Well I figured that on "calm" days I can sometimes fish the bow and when choppy stay in the cockpit. Anyone have experience fishing this style boat in the bay?

Great all round boat that will do fine on the bay. I have an 18 Fisher CC with the forward deck and it works great in the bay and on the river. Its for sale if interested.

My dad has a Starcraft dual console aluminum boat. Fish's the St Clair river, lake st clair and hits lake Huron every now and then. Great boat for his purposes, walleye mostly. The majority of fishing boats in the river are that style boat. Ok ride, great storage and decent price. Not my first choice of boats, but our purposes are a little different. His is strictly fishing, nice and light to run an electric trolling motor to get a good drift against current to jig, great for running planer boards while trolling. Very versatile.

Could you sit in the chair on the bow casting platform in say 1ft chop comfortably?

Starcraft was a boat I looked at during my search, which was for boats up to 20 feet, looking to keep weight down, maximize safety, get some weather protection, and a mix of day cruising and fishing. At least for me, I thought that Quintrex made the best fit.

They do make a smaller version of my boat, a 16&1/2 footer. Compared to the Starcraft, it has higher freeboard, a fully enclosed transom, flush hull extension, a high tech 'stretch-formed' hull, sharper bow, more bowflare, anchor locker/bowroller. It has a closed bow with hinged panels in the windshield and bow deck that allow you to walk into the bow while standing on the floor, to handle lines, anchor, or just fish from the bow.

The only trouble will be getting one. The company is the largest boatbuilder in the Pacific basin. They recently made a go of making them here in the US, but the US office made some truely boneheaded moves, so the East coast representation has withered, and they have moved the small US operation to British Columbia. Great product, some boneheads in charge in North America.

If you want a testimonial, I had a professional captain (he is paid to pilot yachts) check me out on the boat the first day. He has a 100 ton license, decades of experience, and has taken boats for clients across the Atlantic, down to South America... after spending a day on it, he called me back and asked if I wanted to sell it.

As I said, I know the US operations are in confusion, but if you are interested, I'd suggest calling Pandolfe's Marine in CT.

I would say absolutely NOT. 16' aluminum boats are just not in their element in foot high chop. Those pedestal chairs are on a swivel. Which makes them awkward in any motion. Better off standing on the floor or sitting directly on a deck when the boat is bouncing.

His is a 20'. I usually fish in the bow. The seat don't swivel easy, and you get some bounce. I wouldn't say it's comfortable. I more or less use the seat as a leaning post if I use it at all. The only time I really sit is until the coffee kicks in, then I stand. Because of the immense boat traffic, freighters and steel walls, we get alot of wake from all angles, so unless your in a big boat, I don't see anyone being too comfortable. Everyone's usually in by 11:00 because of the traffic and waves. People are real azzholes on that river.

Check these out. I have an old one and love it. I use it in the Raritan Bay in April and nice winter days (when my other boat is under wraps.)
