Default 200 HPDI high pressure fuel pump?

Anyone have one of these go bad. I think the ethanol got mine. 6 month old 200 hpdi kept cutting out. Felt like a fuel restricion. Changed the spin on filters and swapped the hoses on the motors. Still same thing happened. Could get it up to about 3000 rpm then it would drop for a second and go back up. Glad I was 42 miles offshore at the time. It would also drop when hitting a good wave. Mechanic will test fuel flow under load tomorrow. He says he usually does one or two a year. This year hes already dome a dozen. Thanks ethanol.

Default RE: 200 HPDI high pressure fuel pump?

Having the same problems with a pair of 2001 150 H.P. Yamaha HPDI's. Motors will run fine up to 3500 rpm's push them up to 4000 rpm's and they will start starving for fuel. At first we thought the problem was either in the fuel tank or fuel lines. Put a vacuum gauge on the fuel lines prior to spin on fuel filter and they were find. Next put a 6 gallon auxiliary gas tank directly feeding each motor, same problem occurred, ruled out fuel system, problem is in the motors. Spoke with a yamaha mechanic and he said since ethanol has been added to the fuel this has been a common occurrence with allot of outboards not just Yamahas. The problem is the lifter pumps. The ethanol eats the pumps and restricts the fuel flow to the motors. Are your primer bulbs soft? Mine were, not getting fuel. Also recommend to change the canister fuel filter that are on the side of the engine, he claims they sometime collapse internally. Look at your in line canister filters yamaha mechanic told me a # 14 should be on the canister if not wrong filter I am having the work done this week Hope this helps.

I didn't change the one on the motor but I took it off, dumped it and it looked fine. Bulbs stayed hard. i didnt check the # but they are the blue Yamaha 10 micron filters. Slow ride home but at least we grabbed a 62 inch bluefin for our troubles.

Are you sure it simply wasn't the VST filter as opposed to the pump? My Yamaha on my last boat had this problem of cutting out when hitting a wave, and it was a clogged VST filter.

An obstructted filter on the bottom of the electric fuel pump is the most common cause, not the high pressure pump. There is also a change in the $85 filter between the VST and the belt driven high-pressure pump that should be replaced. The new design filter has the number 14 printed on it.

Ethanol, is a good cleaner, and it would not surprise me that any buildup after the onboard filter is starting to show it's ugly head, and clogging the filter screen in the the VST.

Goodnyou - Is your boat 6 months olds like the motor? Or is this a repower?

btw - I've run a couple hundred gallons of e10 this year through my 2003 150HPDI (383 hours total). Nary a hiccup. Boat is also a 2003. In fact, it's running like a sewing machine.

Haven't touched any filters except for the 10 micron Yammy water separator filter - looked fine after 100 hours of e-10.

Boat is a 93 and it is a repower. Boat was in New York previously. I have heard they already had ethanol there before this year but cant confirm this. Ive changed the spin ons about every 50 hours to be safe. I figured the ethanol freed up some crap in an old tank. Engine has 165 hrs. Thanks for the help.

Like John from Madison already stated, I can almost gaurantee you it is the VST filter and not the pump. You can clean or replace the filter. On a '93 boat you are going to be doing this more than once unitl the e10 has cleaned all the sludge from your tank/lines. This problem will eventually fade as your system acclimates to the e10.

This was a major problem in CT two years ago, but is not that common now. Had the same problem you discribed off shore Montauk two years ago. Not fun but not to costly either.

Im sure the boat has used up over 1000 gals already, so I was thinking I dodged a bullet with the fuel issue. Hopefully its just a filter and Im back out when the wind stops blowing. I should hear today as Im 2 hours away from the boat.

It was the VST screen filter. Gummed up with junk. Thanks for the help.
