Random Quote: If you can taste the salt in the air.....it's time for a bigger boat!
18' Kenner, Vision model, 2-3' Swells, 6-8 knot winds. 12 miles out....? Plenty of Gas, 36 gallon tank with a 90Merc Saltwater....
Thinking about heading out this weekend, maybe catch me some King Fish. Have owned three boats now. Very well acostumed to offshore fishing. The wife wanted to hear from others if they would go out 12-15 Miles in 2-3 foot swells, light chop, with the 18' Kenner...?
Your comments would be appreciated....
BTW, Another buddy is also taking his 21 footer and we both have Marine Radios....
My boat has a similar hull depth to the 18' Kenner. My boat is set-up a little safer than your Kenner, but still I can, do, and will this weekend go out in those conditions (with my wife as a matter of fact). I wouldn't advise this as the boat to learn on by yourself, but you've already stated that wasn't the case. You should be fine.
I have a Sea Fox 195 w/a Merc 125 (similar setup to yours) and I have had mine 12 miles out and would go further if I needed to. Now I have only had the boat 3 months so I've only once had the opportunity where conditions were right to go offshore and that day blue water was only 6 miles out... Would I have gone farther? Sure, but I didn't need to because we were slamming the kings and Mahi!
That was a great day, we were schooling the big boats as we were consistently doubled up and the fish box had fins hanging out of it..
If the 2-3's aren't stacked, go for it! If they are, you're gonna take a beating and she will never let you live it down.. If your wife reads, this.. I lied!
and lived to tell about it. We got wet and the ride wasn't all that great but, if you pcik your days, it can be done. Just watch the weather and don't try to wait anything out. If it looks like conditions are going to start worsening, head in.
