How should I fasten the winch strap to spool on trailer?

I have an old trailer (for my aluminum boat) that had rope on the winch. I bought a new winch strap to put on but I cant figure out how to spool up the strap without it slipping on the winch arbor. The end of the strap that attaches to the spool is sewn onto itself forming a loop, but that dosent help me. The arbor on the winch is smooth and has nothing to catch the strap on. I tried duct tape but that dosent cut it. Thanks.

Drill a hole through each side of the spool close to the "arbor" and run a bolt through the eye in the strap.

Yep, A Few Bucks has it right.

When we rigged up boats that didn't have the bolt holes in the winch drum, we drilled 'em. That is what the strap loop is for (the bolt).
