I put a Skeggard on my F225 before I could damage it and it does not affect the performance at all, I would recommend it personally for any application, especially if you are prone to rocks or oyster beds etc.

good luck

My local welder says he stays busy just replacing skegs. Very common and very easy for those guys.

I have had skegs replaced on 2 different motors, costs about 100 bucks each. Cant even tell where they were welded.

Choose the shop carefully. Make sure they have experience doing the skeg replacement. Friend had one replaced, shop "burned through" into the gearcase. Said it was his tough luck. Still can't collect on the judgment.

I used a skeg guard on a 60 HP Yamaha, can't see any performance differences at all. They do hold a little water when you pull them out of the water so you might drill a small drain hole near the base.

I had the ops, the motor was down while pulling up the driveway, took a nice chunk out of the skeg. Bought a skeg guard at boaters world or west marine, it was stainless steal and it not only looked great but I saw no performance issues at all. Actually had people ask where I got it and such.

BTW it was on a 225 Yamaha.

I busted a small piece of my skeg while running a flat, pissed me off to no end. Bought the Skeg-Gard for $70 at West Marine. Intalled in less then 10mins., looks good and there is no adverse effects to performance.
