Engine hot light comes on and engine goes into protect mode if run over 4500 rpm. turn motor off and restart, runs fine but does same if run over 4500 rpm again. water pump is pumping
Desperate...starting to feel unfriendly towards my Johnson...
Any Suggestions???
thanks!
yes, but im getting freekin TIRED of seeing the authorized Johnson dealer!!!!!
anyone else with this motor had this much trouble???
its supposed to be a solid motor...granted, it has always got me home, but....and thats a BIG BUT!!!
thanks, sorry for the vent.
I'm surprised about the VRO since there have been many engineering changes to to fix problems and the last 5 to 6 years they have been pretty bullet proof.
Sounds to me like you might some sand or something in your thermostat, that could be causing it to stick in the closed or open position. As far as the VRO goes, take it off and mix your own oil with the gas. I once had a 130 Johnson that was brand new and had the same problems, but not at the same time. As soon as the VRO stopped working, i took it off and mixed my own oil and gas. I put another 1500 hours on the motor without having any problems. good luck.
I have a 2001 90 that did the same thing. Mechanic started with water pump, same symptoms. New thermostats, same symptoms. Took thermostats out and ran it, same symptoms. New power pack, problem solved. It took a while but he finally figured it out. Have not had any problem with the VRO(knock on wood).
Bring it to me if it's still in warranty it won't cost anything and I'll explain to you why you're having so many problems, probably something stupid like wingnuts on the battery or crud/water in the oil tank. Is this a repower or a new boat?? who hung the engine?? send me your engine's serial number so I can check into it's history. Jupiterzeke Palm Beach County's only Mastertech
new boat. i guess it was hung by the dealer (haha, hung Johnson). anyway. its under warrenty for another 2 years. it does have a fuel/water seperator. hopefully it is a stuck thermostat this time and the VRO is fine. cant go to premix til out of warrenty.
My Johnson tends to turn to the right. If I just stand there, hands off, it will go to the right to about 45 degrees. I thought since it was a big Johnson that it may be the torque. However, I have a friend with a big Johnson and if he takes his hands off, it stays straight. I have heard stories about others who's Johnsons will angle to the right, and even some that will angle to the left. Does this have to do with the size of the Johnson and torque?

Don't disconnect the VRO! VRO today is a pretty good system. Disconnecting came from when OMC had trouble on the early models. As I previously posted they are pretty much bullet proof now. Some think that VRO is a bad omen when it's not!
As far as over temp, you sure you did not suck up spome sand?
EEwww..a Johnson DEALER? Uhh, I'll take the John Dillinger model! Unfortunately, my Johnson has been outa warranty for years, but still works fine...my wife performs all necessary services, btw, as it is very simple to maintain...a little lube, and it's good to go. It's an older short shaft model, but has never failed to start, even under water.
We had a "leaky Johnson" thread a few years ago.... the same time I "warned" people they were providing too many joke threads and not real information.
I checked link. But they did not have the info I was looking for..
My Johnson has a woody often and gets wet. Should I test my woody for rot? poke it with a finger" If I find rot, should I dry it out then encapsulate it in fiberglass so it won't rot any more? I hear epoxy is best.
