Opti Max issue - hmmm??? This is in regards to my brother's boat:
Was out running, engine seems fine - idle down sounds "rough." We cut the engine & throw in the anchor (tide was running hard). For the next 20 minutes engine try to start, i.e. sputters but nothing. We finally get the engine running by starting it in fast idle, quickly drop it into gear and get it back up to 2000 RPMS (won't run at idle what so ever). Immediately head in - on the run in notice that every once in a while engine drops about 200RPM on the tach for a split second as if one of the cylinders is misfiring (cruising at 4000RPM).
We were able to get a tech over yesterday to look at it. Good compression on 5 of 6 cylinders (no real surprise here, especially with the loosing 200 RPMs on the way in). This sounds simple enough Sea Foam treatment new plugs (even though only ~20hrs on 'em). So we pull all plugs wire brush clean 'em - still can get the engine to start.
Now tech hooks up the computer. The issue that is troubling him is that the engine is reading voltage as "N/A." Obviously we are getting voltage b/c engine turns over well (have two 12 volt AGM batteries for cranking-fully charged). We also notice that it seems that the engine's ECM is flooding the cylinders b/c when it does "spit" as if to start it smokes excessively. The tech even tried hooking up a seperate starter system to the engine just to see if it was an issue along those lines...nope.
He also checked the "hottness" (not exactly sure the proper lingo here so please bear with me) of the spark on the engine. It was an blue-orange color & according to the tech should be blue only.
Other things that usually get asked on posts like this, I'll go ahead and answer:
-Make 1999
-HP 135
-Runnning premium plus oil
-No alarms ever went off
-Can't even get it started now, even if trying a fast start
At this point the tech is stumped but has promised to make some calls to other techs, Merc etc. to get this straightened out. He was here for about 2.5 hrs. to no avail but still has faith - hasn't charged us a dime yet & won't until the problem is solved.
But, in the mean time I thought it would be worth posting the issue here in case some else out there has run into a similar issue or has any new ideas. |
