Hey guys,
Going to the boat show this year to lurk around. I've never spent any real time around Miami, so we (wifey) will spend a few days checking out area. We are staying up around Ft. Laud and have a car, and will sepnd 3 days down in Key West checkin that out.
So what should we do after the show in Miami, Ft.Laud and in Key west? Any good ideas of must see tourist crap? Although I HATE tourist crap.
Let the Bride hang in EYW for a day while you go fishing. John SMouse, Shadowcaster CHarters. Great back-country guide. ON you're way down, stop into the Ocean View in Islamorada. Gary Dunn owns it...
Consider the following as good options
1. Going on an Everglades National Park tour on an airboat ride
2. Great restaurants in the Miami area, plenty of choices
3. Miami Beach nightlife
4. Monty's in Miami Beach or Coconut Grove
5. Golf
6. Back Country fishing charter thru Everglades
7. Factory tours of some boat builders in the area
Just some ideas that you may want to think about..
If you have not been there before, you probably are not prepared for the size of the event. Once you've done the new boats and the halls, you've got to go to the in water displays. The one at the marina with al the demos is amazing, but the used yacht section has to be seen to be believed. Good walking shoes are esssential. The shsow can take all day for a boat nut. enven the wives will enjoy browsing the hundreds of huge used yachts for sale. Between crawling in, on or around more boats than I'd ever seen in one place at one time, I found the days were too short.
I may be nuts, but after the show I wanted to go places like the biggest Bass Pro shop I've ever seen in Ft. Lauderdale. They also have a great restaurant in there. The Miami show is 2 pounds of coke for a boat junkie.
I am also headed down for the week. Looking to do a sailfish charter, maybe a night time tarpon trip and thinking about running up to see the Daytona 500 before coming home Tue.
If you or steelhead want to get together on a sailfish charter and need a third let me know. I have my feelers out for a charter but did not book anything yet. My admiral is staying home. I will be in town for four days.

Hit Joe's Stone Crab for dinner one night, Sleep in and hit South Beach at night, but don't go out too early, the party starts later in the evening.
Don't miss the Boat Brokerage Show on Collins Ave, there will be some nice large boats down there. Not to mention some smoking hot babes. Dress like you have money and you'll get on any boat down there.
I've buzzed up to Daytona to Check out the Truck Race. If you're into racing at all the truck race is the one to see. It's a short race and these guys get after it from the time the flag drops. You could also cruise Daytona Beach, which is nice if it's warm and you rent a convertible.
Fishing is going to be a crap shoot, it's going to depend if it's blowing or not. Stuart Florida has some decent charters if the sails are around.
Key West is a haul from Miami, not worth the trip in my opinion. Should be done on a separate trip. The only thing to do down there is to get drunk. You could try fishing the reef but that's a real crap shoot. Could try the back water for light tackle action. The beach down there sucks.
You could stop at Bud and Mary's marina in Islamorada or call them to book a sword fishing trip. They run daytime trips from there.
IF you want to just hit a beach, South Beach is nice.
You can't beat Miami night life, especially when you are single. After the boat show, this is what you should look like . SMASHED.This was us last year.I'm on the right. There's more pics that WILL not be shown.

CMP
I second CMP, go the Key West and go fishing. I have fished a lot with John Smouse and he is a great guy. Mostly back-country stuff so the experience is really diverse and really interesting. Go for it.

Coconut Grove Arts Festival is the same weekend; your wife may like that after a few days of the boat show.
I live in Key West and have a second home in Miami- In Miami, I second the motion for Joe's Stone Crab followed by the south beach nightlife- pick up a local New Times paper to find the hot club of the week or just stroll Ocean Blvd- most restaurants are good, I like the News Cafe for breakfast with a view. Lincoln Road is close to the show and well worth a stroll for the wife. In Key West, you could fish offshore with Capt. Paul Tryon or any of the guides he works with(Key West Pro Guides, I think), I don't do flats so can't recommend. You must do Blue Heaven for breakfast to see our wildlife. Restaurants I frequent are A&B Lobster House(request Chester as your server), Azur(delicious grilled Bronzino), Conch Republic seafood(great cracked conch, huge bar and fish sandwiches) or Brazalena for Brazilian steak served gaucho style in a beautiful setting(ask for the "43" after dinner). Hemingway house is interesting, as are Mel Fisher's museum and strolling Duval. Enjoy yourself and spend lots of money.
