I've got a Nikon D40 and have been following along this thread with open ears as I really know very little about photography. I do know I'd like to have a wide angle lense but $1150 is waaaaay out of my budget. Is there a more affordable wide angle that is adequate mostly for landscape photos?

nowadays, the camera body prices are coming way down as the technology trickles down from the high end products. Glass, however, is glass... It takes a ton of precision labor to create the lenses ( kit lenses excluded...) that will produce very wide or very telephoto shots. the more elements, the more $$$. Pretty simple. It takes a ton of engineering to create a wide angle lens that will not have any distortion towards the corners and sides of the frame. Your best bet is ebay or KEH.com or your local camera shop and browse the used gear. The quality from sigma, Tamron, and the like are OK, but Nikon, Canon and Zeiss are by far superior to these. You get what you pay for. You may be able to get an older manual focus lens at a cheaper price, as I have done in the past, but you will have to understand Aperature and Shutter speed (read: you will need a light meter) to get some acceptable images. If you really need it, bite the bullet and get the glass. you will have it for many many many years.

I stopped by a camera outlet in Orlando Thursday; they had a 2-lens adapter set that screwed on the front of the 18-55 lens on the D60 (52 mm). One adapter looked like a fisheye lens and greatly expanded the field of view, but without any fisheye distortion. The second adapter was a macro lens that allowed me to get a crystal-clear picture of my wife's rings from a distance of about 3".
Like a dummy (I attribute it to a "senior moment"), I failed to make note of the manufacturer. Only thing I remember is that the set cost $149 and comes in a square wooden case. They are available in a variety of diameters to fit the most popular DSLR lens sizes.
If I get by that store again, I plan to get a set in 55mm for my own camera.
Last weekend I purchased the latest D90 with a Sigma 18-200 lens, already had a mono pod and have been taking some shots. The camera is a very nice bit of kit have been taking lots of shots. Going out tonight to take some photos of our city.
The video side of the camera appears to function quite well, After only have the camera for a few hours I was down the local drag strip shooting video of Jet dragsters. Took some time to get used to it, but having this feature while out fishing will mean I will only need to carry one camera and not a second video camera. I would imagine I will need a second battery and a extra 4 gig card.
I didn't;t spot this thread until just now some good info there.

I'll be in touch with both you and Loody this week with our Miami schedule. Extremely busy Feb I have - and now wife going to Abaco Bahamas right up until the day before we leave for Miami!
Hang tight. Still might do Coconut Grove Sunday as I'll be "showed out" by then.

That is cool, Tammy wants to go as well. We are renting a car to get around a little easier.
