Boating & Outdoor Photos - Hurricane John in Baja Mexico

A few weeks back Hurricane John came ashore at the end of the 1000 mile baja peninsula at the East Cape, a world famous sportfishing spot. It worked its way parallel to the east side of baja dropping feet of rain in its path. Mulege is 670 miles south of the border and is the only fresh water river to reach the Sea of Cortez in baja. In fact it is the only river i know of in the west that has snook. Mulege is located on the Sea of Cortez and is an american retirement community mixed in with the locals and fishermen like myself who annually camp and fish in this special part of the world. Mulege's river is usually only tens of feet across with casitas (small concrete houses), motels, schools and trailers lining both sides of the river. The river has docks for the people to moor their boats just around the corner from the sea. The town is on the north bank. John by the time it reach Mulege at midnight only had winds of about 45 mph but it dropped over a foot of rain on the town and the high hills to the west. Residence were awaken at 2 in the morning with water rushing into their homes and rising fast. The lucky ones go out with the clothes on their backs. It crested at about 25' at the top of the bridge in the pic. Most lost everything and alot of the town was destroyed.

There was almost zero coverage in San Diego. I'm sure you eastcoast guys did not know this catastropy even happened. Now Hurricane Lane is aimed straight at the same area at the end of baja with a forcast to hit by sunday. Thanks for posting. I missed that boat in the tree in the 5th picture the first few times I looked. Were you there for the storm?

HH, I hate to see that. I bet it's no insurance, no gov assist, no nothing but just years of scraping to rebuild for most of those folks. How many died? Did you have any losses there? What does it take to have one of those houses rebuilt?
