The ACR Mini B is an EPIRB. Its primary function today is for crew overboard recovery. The Minin B just like regualr EPIRBS broadcasts on the 121.5 mhz signal. With a radio directional finder you have the ability to hone in on this signals. All commercial airplanes monitor this frequency, and it is a distress frequesncy. Unlike today's EPIRBS the Mini B does not broadcast on the 406 mhz frequency. By febuary of 2009 all satelites operating on a 121.5 mhz frequency will be disabled for SAR uses. Therfore your MINI B will be useless for SAR purposes. Do not be disparged, pair this up with a radio directional finder, and you have one of the finest crewoverboard systems

So you are saying that this is better than running no Epirb? Will work until 2009? It is better to have this than no Epirb, right?

Absoultely. It is better to be at sea with the Mini B than no EPIRB at all. It will always work. On Febuary 1 2009 the distress satlelites that relay the 121.5 signal will be disarmed. regardless commercial aircrafts monitor this signal, and it is a distress signal.
