The Carolinas - Charlotte gets NASCAR HOF???

Charlotte gets new NASCAR hall of fame. WTF? NASCAR started in Wilkes and Alexander counties. Just ask Junior. Lowes Motor Speedway, even though it started out as Charlotte Motor Speedway, was never in Charlotte. It wasn't even in Mecklenburg County.
BTW, I haven't been a NASCAR fan since they did away with "run what ya brung" so I really don't care but it does seem a bit odd that they would get away from their roots.

I agree Shag, but it sure beats Orlando, which was in the running!

There was one other city in the running... maybe Kansas City ? (or some other city that made no sense).
Thus, Charlotte seemed like the most appropriate choice of the three cities on the list.

Charlotte paid NASCAR the most...$136,000,000.00 for building. :(
Moral is: If you're really rich (exp. Bob "cat" Johnson, or Bill "stock car" France, or "Panther" Richardson) and own some kind of sport stuff, come to "The Queen City"...we'll pay you to be here. :o

The bad part about this is that we will probably lose the Winston Allstar Race.BTW Shaq, One of the original actual tracks they ran on in Nascar was off of Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte.

It was RICHMOND - along with KC! :o
I never thought us or them made any sense, either - KC would be a little "out of the way", IMHO? ;?
And WE (Richmond) got that high "murder rate" goin' for us!
I think NC was as good a choice as any! ;cool;

Yes, but the real BS is that it is funded via tax $$$.
Now that deserves a WTF???

I do hereby stand corrected.

Yeah for us... our roads stink, crime rate escalating out of control, our schools are a national embarrasment, traffic is a nightmare.. but we can fork out tax money for a racing hall of fame and an arean for Bob Cat Johnson and his other billionaire buddies and now NASCAR.
Property tax rate up 11% last year and up 3 of the last 5 years...
They say this will not be paid for by taxpayers, but rather a tax on hotel and motel rooms. BS! Yes, the law says that the hotel/motel tax must be used for tourism but what we need is LEADERSHIP to change that law.
If the hotel tax is so easy to raise, change the law so that raising that tax will go to improving life for those of us who live here and pay the highest taxes in the Southeastern United States!
The HOF is great, I am sure it will do well. But to build this at the expense of more important and more legitimate government purposes is ridiculous. It should have been a private venture completely.

Actually, the three cities in the running were Atlanta, Daytona Beach and Charlotte. I agree that it should be a private venture as well as NASCAR and the France thugs will reap the most. Just like their attempt at racial diversity.............it's all about extracting hard earned dollars from our wallets and putting warm butts in the seats. I've been a race fan most of my 54 years but the direction the sport is going is turning myself and many of other life long fans away. IMHO, the worst thing to happen to NASCAR, other that the loss of Dale Earnhardt, was the day Bill France got in bed with Tony George of Indy. It's went down hill since. They should bring back the Hickory Speedway, North Wilksboro and Rockingham and let the boys race like men instead of sipping fine wine and chomping on stinky cheese. If they keep going like they are, it won't be long before they skip around the track holding hands and singing " Will You Be My Neighbor?" ARRRRGGGGGGG !

That number has changed considerably. It is now up to $154,000,000.00. I am a Nascar fan but I also agree with others that building the HOF in uptown Charlotte is a bad idea. The politicians in Charlotte are opposed to growth unless it occurs in uptown. The HOF should really be built up in Concord near the track. Just my .02.

They have been getting away from the roots for a while now....When ISCA went to the NYSE it was faster down hill. Agreed here......its all about warm seats and revenue. No matter what the other cost....NASCAR sux!
