I just spoke with a Furuno tech and he told me that they have a new forward sonar that should be released by the Miami boat show. He says that the testing showed it had a forward range of 1000'. Testing waters were 30' + deep.
I'm told the sonar isn't extremely fast at updating, so it wouldn't be extremely useful if you're doing 50 MPH but at 10 mph, it should give you enough time to react.
I boat in Lake Simcoe, but travel the Trent and Georgian Bay a couple times a year and am always worried about those hidden rocks that aren't marked on any chart. I know generally where there might be rocks and already go slow, but a bit of advanced warning (that didn't involve a banging sound) would help me feel a bit more confident.
