Got a new 2013 GMC 2500 duramax about 4 months ago. Like the truck, plenty of power and good with MPG. The only thing I don't like is the sound sucks. Would it sound better if I put a new air intake on and a new exhaust. I don't know if its possible with the new diesel exhaust fluid you have to put in these things. Anyone with mods let me know.

I put on the dual exhaust from Banks Power. It is a "cat back" exhaust, which means it bolts on after the Catalytic converter. So, the muffler is removed. The sound is a bit throatier, without being annoyingly loud. And the duals look great !

the banks stuff does sound pretty mean.... these engines are BEASTS but don't go trying to hot rod tuner all of it.... stock engine (maybe an exhaust mod) they last forever... you go plugging in crap... we'll see you at the dealership. Btw... don't change the air cleaner... odds are it'll give you some issues, we see a lot of people with issues and they had just went to the local parts place and bought a filter... bring them in, swap a true AC DELCO filter in and good to ride....

I agree -- The OP said 'plenty of power and good mpg" -- so if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Only thing I did was put on the dual exhausts in place of the original muffler and single pipe. Nice sound, very subtle. Just enough different to tell that it's there.

Maybe LOL. Guess I was old even 11 years ago when I bought my Duramax... It was the quietest thing on the market back then. Pretty sure the Ford 6.7 is the quietest as of now.

The FORD 6.7L is SCARY quiet for a diesel. first one I seen I thought was a 6.2L it was so quiet. And for a 07 and up DURAMAX, an exhaust won't do much for the sound. Even straight piped an LMM is pretty quiet with the emissions still in place, and the new LML(11-13) is even quieter with 2 cats and a DPF(the DPF has a SCR cat built into the front of it for the urea system).

I just ordered everything to delete my dpf. The urea tank was saying exhaust fluid was bad and knocking truck to 55mph for past few months. Took to GM and after $250 they still didn't know what was wrong. They wanted more money for more "testing" then id have to pay for whatever sensors were bad (exhaust is only warrantied to 36k. I thought 100k) so figured get all that bs out and get better mpg too.

My '03 LB7 is straight piped with the factory 3.5" exhaust. No cat and no muffler. It's definitely loud but not over top I don't think. Has a nice throaty sound to it.

I had this same deal with my 2011 duramax. I asked on a duramax website what was the best way to make my truck sound like it actually had a set of balls, and the answer I got was that the dpf had to be taken out. I'm not happy with the truck anyways so I'm going to hold off and get a 6.7 that I will make sound throaty.

Exhaust is warrantied to 36K, BUT the emissions system MUST be warrantied to 80K(EPA mandate). Find a new dealer and report your current one to GM as the DPF and urea system is DEFINATELY part of the 8 year 80K emissions warranty.

Call GM and complain about it.I have seen them Warranty things on Vehicles that are out of the normal Warranty period to satisfy the Customer.Sometimes they will at least split the cost. The Warranty process within the Dealerships is getting VERY tight now.

GM has SO MANY freakin' rules, processes for a Warranty claim it's ridiculous! They come in and audit Warranty claims......If 1 i isn't dotted......They charge the Dealer back for the Claim! As a Tech,You really never could make any money on a Warranty repairs,GM keeps cutting the times you get paid for doing the same exact repair!! Now twice as much paperwork for the Tech to submit[Documentation]...

Service Manager can also Electronically send the claim in and they will reply with an answer, whether they will cover it or not. Hope this helps ya'...[Mike]

Where and what did you order. Last I checked those companies that sell tuners to allow you to reprogram your computer to delete the DPF system were made to shut down by the guberment.

Theres still some H&S tuners out there from before the EPA shut down for sale that people are selling. And there are a few custom tuning companies coming out that will be offering DPF urea deletes for the LML.

Yes there are ways around it. I went H&S and then there's a $100 unlock code & then a guy will custom tune it. Cost $2200 for exhaust, air intake, tuner & tune.

EFI live tuned and def delete straight piped is the way to go. EFI live is more fined tuned than just a plug and play tuner like H&S or bullydog or anything like that. You will have lower egt's, more efficient power and less smoke. http://www.efilive.com/

It's coming, but NOT like what we have been accustomed to. EFILIVE has set it up so that you can use your V2 or AUTOCAL to flash in others tunes to an LML, but they are not able to read the tune out and at this time are not offering the software to make changes to a tune file. So the tuner has to come up with the base file, use there own software to modify it, and then import it to an EFILIVE file to be flashed in.

Yea, I was wondering about that with your truck being so new. Manufacturers are trying harder every day to make it where we can't tune these trucks anymore.

X100 on EFI tuning & deleting everything - even using the HS Tuner on the newer LML motors has some good reviews. My 2010 has no cat, no dpf, complete EGR removal, LB7 up-pipe, diamond eye downpipe, transgo in the Allison. 19-20mpg at 75-80mph -- back off to 70 & I am 21-22mpg. Tows the 38 Fountain faster than I need to go & I'm still getting around 10mpg. I can tune LBZs & LMMs if anyone interested too.

So, this is a bit off subject but seems like a good thread to ask. The new trucks require DEF (urea) and go into limp mode if you run out of fluid.

A) What's would happen if you subbed water for DEF? I may be wrong but isn't the DEF only injected into the exhaust? Would water hurt it?

B) What's stopping you from opening or shorting (which ever it needs)the float in the DEF tank?

I'm so GD tired of our government (especially the EPA)! I think all this added-on BS that just makes more crap to break on an already incredibly complicated truck is the main reason I'm still driving my 11 y/o truck. Just not ready to go from a motor with a blow-by tube to one that has all that CRAP on it!

The sensor in the tank knows that it is UREA, it won't accept water, or even if you pee in the tank yourself, it has to be the real stuff.

I have a 2012 F250 6.7L, I have to be honest, it is a non-issue. I burn a gallon every 1200 to 1500 miles, it comes in a 2.5 gallon container, I change my oil at 3K miles and refill the tank. It costs about 12 bucks. If I am towing I use a gallon about every 600 miles, and refill it before each tow.

The urea injection isn't that complicated, but it helps the diesel eliminate NOX, which Diesels typically make a lot of. That is what makes smog. We aren't talking about hypothetical global warming issues here, we are talking about real NOX and real smog, the stuff that makes the sky kind of yellow and makes it hard to breathe on a hot day. I am happy to do my part of get rid of it.

The particulate trap is separate, and doesn't use the UREA, instead it traps the black particles that make the diesel exhaust black, and then periodically injects raw fuel into the exhaust right in front of the trap and bring the trap temperature up to about 1300 degrees F, and burns the stuff off. It happens about once a tank, and it definitely costs you in fuel efficiency, but having spent time in Europe and seen how black the buildings are from the diesel soot, also seems like a worthwhile inconvenience.

I can see your point(s) but math just kills me.

~$5/ gallon DEF.
2.5 gallons /3,000 miles
The cost I'd have paid with the ~ 300,000 miles on my current truck would have been:

100 2.5 gallon fill-ups or 250 gallons of DEF at ~$5 /gallon = ~
$1250 on top of $4/gallon ULSD. And that's not towing -which I would assume cost twice as much because towing ~10,000 pounds or so I usually get 1/2 the mpg I do unloaded.

Plus soooooooooo much more stuff to break!

I go through a tank of urea every 4k miles on my Duramax. I think my tank is 4.5 gallons. My Ford is every 12k miles and not sure the size of it but I think its 5 gallons. The pain in the ass about it is no one really carries it. Walmart is usually good for 1 gallon of it. Auto parts stores are usually a gallon also. So I drive all over town to locate it. If I'm out of town forget it. Plus minimum bill GM said I was going to probably have would be $700 from their previous experiences. Just a waste to me when the past 80k miles I could have got 2-3mpg more without it. Regen burns the crap out of diesel.

Advance auto parts has the 2.5 gallon containers for about 12 bucks.

If you go to a pilot truck stop and fill up in the truck lanes, they have separate DEF pumps, and it is about half that much. You just fill it like a fuel tank, put the nozzle in it and fill. I do that a lot when I am towing since I have to use those lanes anyway.

Did the delete today. Sounds good. Just a slight rumble. But not much louder than stock unless you lay on it. I wanted quiet cause I drive a lot and on phone most the time. A few bugs to work out with the tune though. Feels like a lot of lag at 50-70mph if you go to pass someone. Also it smokes pretty good which I hate. Cruise control quit working so have to add that back in also. I'm sure it will be perfect after next tune.

Very happy with truck. Sounds just fine towing. Not too loud at all. Getting 2-3mpg more without towing. Cruise control came back when I put speed limiter back on. Only issue I have now is interior light don't come on when I open door. I'll mess with that soon.

Word to the wise. DO NOT delete anything from the truck it WILL BE very expensive per our meeting with the EPA. Google Edge Products EPA lawsuit and the outcome. H&S under the microscope as of Sept 2012 ( not far from Edge in Utah) and will either follow suit or move to Canada. FWIW the guys at H&S are PHENOMINAL guys and think THEY are doing the right thing. More HP and better fuel eco ect
