*****UPDATE***** They just pulled back into the marina. From what I understand, the epirb went off around three hours ago and it was the type w/o internal GPS. Obviously his wife, who is standing on the dock is very relieved. I will post details when I get them as a lesson learned. I can say he DID NOT have a float plan. Thank you to anyone who tried to contact people who fished today.

Guys, my friends epirb went off approx an hour or two ago and we are not sure where he is out of Venice. He is in a 26' twin vee with twin 140's. They are spearfishing. The boat has a sticker on the side that says TEAM Tuna Toucher. I would guess he would be inside of the 24 mile rigs if east and inside MC311 if west. PLEASE CALL YOUR FRIENDS WHO FISHED TODAY out of Venice, Grand Isle or West Mississippi and find out if they saw this boat. Your help is greatly appreciated. PM me with any info, I will be checking back every 15 minutes or so.

Thank you

Ray

Did it go off with the passing of that storm Ray? I was over between Cat and Ship Island when it started threatening and made tracks for Long Beach. There was some nasty wind imbedded in that cell. Is the 406 hit not giving an accurate position?

I just got off the phone with Ray. His bud is back safe in Venice. Ray will post details later.

Glad all is ok, what happened if you don't mind me asking. I had some friends head out for an over nighter towards the horseshoes out of Biloxi.

Guys, I still dont have any details. What I am typing is second hand info at best. The fact is the epirb is mounted on the outside stantion of the top where it will easily deploy in the event of a capsized boat. Appearently, when the seas kicked up during the storms yesterday, the epirb fell into the water. He was able to quickly turn around and get it. In that time, the epirb sent out a signal. For some reason, he either didnt contact CG or couldnt contact CG to let them know that they were okay. Given the storms and sea state during the storms, everyone involved began frantically trying to organize every asset possible to find them before dark. Thankfully, he ended up showing back up at the marina before anyone actually went out to find him. If I find ot any of these details are not true or I can add more, I will.

In the past, threads have been started telling everyone things that must be on the boat. We have all seen them. I would once again stress having at least 2 VHF's, one mounted 25w and one handheld 5w radio. Ideally, you should have 2 mounted vhfs but whatever. Not only should you have the radio but you should ALWAYS keep it on scanning or channel 16. That way if something like this happens to you, the CG would contact you and you could tell them you are fine instead of wasteing CG, family, and friends time.

Hard to believe someone went out this weekend with those storms coming through. Glad to hear they survived it.

yeah no kidding...
looked covered up all weekend with reds and purples

redfishray was the boater in question aware when he returned to port that the APB had been sent out for him?

Oh yes, he was aware. His wife was waiting on the dock :trout:. I would not have wanted to be him.

Glad all is well. Again, no reason to go out in that weather.

So did they actually have trouble with the weather?take on water?lose power or whatever, or was the epirb simply accidentally dropped in the water and activated?

Fell out of the holder into the water. One person on the boat said they repeatedly tried to call cg but did not get a response via vhf. Not sure if their radio was not transmitting properly.

meh, We were out there as well, with predicted 1-2 footers and 50% chance of rain, seems like any other summer day prediction. At 6 am Venice was almost completely clear, with the storms near cocodrie/grand isle. By about 11 am the storm started to grow and we began getting closer to the pass. With the right equipment and watching the storm on XM I don't believe it was irresponsible being out there. Made it back to S. Pass before it picked up too much, but got pounded by wind and rain for a bit on the way back once inside the pass though.

That was a cool front and the line of storms was 300 miles long, no? Or am I thinking of a different day?

not sure, my xm display shows the fronts and there weren't any fronts near us on Saturday just thunder storms, but it was blowing a good 30-35 mph while we were in S pass.
