Makes perfect sense for the pilot to think of that. Sanctions prevent purchase or sale of goods (fuel) and services...and this fit into that category, apparently.
It would seem pretty obvious that AF would have reimbursed those that contributed upon arrival at their destination

While it sounds outrageous, after reading the article I could see it being a possibility. It's not like they have an account with Syria!!!
