Picking a reel for jigging can sometimes be a tricky thing especially if it is a spinning reel and you have a budget like most of us do. Frame material, rotor material, retrieve speeds, drag strength and material all are important factors to consider amongst your budget.

One of my customers loves the penn battle and has caught plenty of black fin tunas on it and so far he says it is holding up very nice. His biggest tuna to date on this reel while jigging with our green terror vertical jig 5.3oz is right around 25lbs maybe a little over and he said the reel handled it like a champ. He also mentioned the retrieve is fast and very smooth along with a better than expected drag.

I personally use the Shimano Saragosa and i have whooped on plenty of big AJs with it. I fish it with 80lb braid on a travala 50-100lb rod. This reel has held up very well for me, i do baby it after every trip but when she is on the water its all business! The drag is super smooth and the retrieve is nice and fast! I highly recommend this reel to anyone looking into getting a spinning reel for vertical/butterfly jigging.

The Stella..... Shall we say more? It is the grail most of us want but cannot reach! Amazing its construction, lighting fast retrieval and beefy 55lb of drag make it the hulk of vertical jigging reels. A lot of huge tunas have been taken with this reel and if money is not an object then this is the one to get!

I hope this weeks tip helps you in your spinning reel shopping for your jigging rod. Any questions or need any jigs please check out our listing.

A true jigging reel gear ratio is from 4:1-5:1. If you go with the Stella I would recommend the SW20000. The SW18000 is use for popping with its high gear ratio to retrieve stickbait and poppers.
