Do antenna splitters work. Looking to use 1 antenna for both VHF and Am/Fm radio. Or is it better to use 2 antennas. Thanks

I have a splitter, a friend of mine has the wire antenna that lays behind the stereo in his cuddy.. they get the same reception so I would suggest saving your money...

A splitter is a waste of time, you need two antennas.you won't get a clear amfm signal.

The Shakespeare passive diplexor (http://vtronix-antennas.com/antennashow.asp?cat=amfm&show=4357-s) is a fine solution.
Both the VHF and the AM/FM work fine with this device.
The diplexor / triplexor is a common component in receivers, to split / route the bands to the various tuners.

Another option, if you have a TV antenna, is to put an FM splitter on that. That's how I did it and it works great.

I tried it a few times years ago with horrible luck, go with two antennas, just too many things that can go wrong with a splitter.

I have a splitter, and honestly wish I had 2 antenna. For the cost of the splitter I am sure I could have another antenna. It had to be replaced a while ago and only replaced it vs a new antenna cause I was too lazy to route new wires trough already full wire chases. The new one works great, the questions for how long???

I chose one of these:

I figure I'll get better am/FM reception off my vhf 8ft. antenna!

I have this one at a price of $60. FM reception was okay but terrible backfeed when keying up VHF mic. I now have the $9 antenna wire under my dash.

I don't recommend antenna splitters. They will work however you are adding complexity to a safety device which the VHF is. The splitters are prone to corrosion and adds resistance to the VHF.
You're on the right track, buy the second AM antenna. the 3' antennas are fine for the am/fm radio.

Thank you for all of the advice. So I decided to run 2 VHF's with seperate antennas, the back up I will run the splitter with the Am/FM. This way if there is a problem with the splitter I can just connect the back up VHF directly to the antenna cable.
