My last oil change in the Mercedes was $95.00 at the dealership, for that I got a C250 loaner car for the day a wash and a vacuum and do not have to have an oil service for 12 months 13,000 miles....

The jeep reuires a 35.00 oil change every 3,000/ 3 months so every year I am spending $ 140.00 just to keep the maintenance on schedule....

My guess is marketing management as practiced by various car stores. Your Honda dealer wants your car into their shop regularly, because those oil changes both help pay their overhead, but also allow them to inspect the underside and note suspension, steering, brakes, tires, etc.

They also build customer loyalty from the sales side.

You got that right... my co workers rule of thumb for his beemer = 1k everytime it goes in - and it goes in often. His is 10 years old with 110k & he's been in twice a year for the past three years.

Now only one of his 4 windows works, he has to get in the car via the back door (reach over the seat and open the front door), his power seats are borked... he's looking at another 2k+ in repairs.

Agreed- I can see that from the way the Accord is built. Oil filter and drain plug are placed where it is most difficult for the DIY to access- back side of the engine, near center. Toyota went to the cartridge (not spin-on) filters and also made them harder to find. It's obvious they want those cars coming back to the shop on a regular basis.

DIY oil change couldn't be simpler on my '97 Camry, clearly harder to do on the 2012. And- cartridge oil filter? Geez- when I sold my '55 car, I thought I had gotten rid of that nuisance for good. Dealer tells me "it's more environmentally responsible". Please...

They are probably using a specific synthetic oil that sells for over $10 a quart. The oil changes on my VW Jetta TDI at the dealership run a little less than $80. It's just as expensive at any of the Jiffy-Lube or other oil and lube shops. The oil for my Jetta is only available at VW dealerships. I guess I could use any diesel synthetic and save a few bucks, but the oil change interval is 10K miles...most other auto makers advise a 3-5K interval. So, it works out to be a reasonable amount taking that into consideration.

Not sure what other auto makers you mean. GM, Honda, Toyota haven't recommended 3K oil changes in close to 20 years, more like 7500 miles.

Advance Auto Parts regularly does DIY synthetic oil sales - 5 quarts of oil plus a higher end filter = $30 or $35. This is the cheapest I ever remember synthetic oil, but they've been doing it for the last few years.

Having maintaned japanese, german, and american cars - I much prefer the cartridge filters. You can stand next to the car and replace it without getting a drop of oil on you. In fact, between my Dodge, Honda, and Mercedes, I'd say the Mercedes oil change is the least hassle.

I can't see any value in doing oil changes with a shorter interval than 5000 miles, and I suspect many drivers could go 10k without worrying about it. BTW my last honda pilot had an oil filter about the size of one of those little steel juice cans, and it held 4.5 qts of oil - for a 3.5 liter V6.

$23 for 5 liters and $7 for a filter = $30

Plus I get the guarantee of some min wage oil monkey not overtightening the drain plug and filter and spilling oil all over my engine block and then trying to wipe up the oil and knocking the plug wire off the spark plug resulting in another trip to a mechanic or stripping the threads of the bolts that hold on the splash guard under my engine.
Or them forgetting to put the parking break on my manual shift honda and the car rolling out into the parking lot and hitting the curb.

True stories...No thanks for an $80+ oil change. I can manage.

BTW, Dodge is offering 4 (non-synthetic) oil changes for $49.95 total, prepaid, good for 2 years. Im glad im not a rich person or i would buy and expensive car that requires expensive service then id have to find somewhere to complain about it.

GM has recently gone to the cartridge filters on their smaller engines, in my wifes car, and it is right front and center. Makes for an easier oil change as well. They do require dexos certified oil now and am buying from Sams club which here is close to the same price as wally world. I think it was $30 for 6qts maybe. Filter was like 4 bucks.

I have seen my share too, but if you keep up with the recommended services as suggested by the dealer (diy or stealership) you will rarely be stranded.

I have owned 4 different Mercedes (E Class) and 3 Different Bmw's(3,5&7) and 9 different Jeeps (CJ, Wrangler, Commanche, Grand Cherokee, Commander, Wrangler)...And all of of them went to 300K+ miles plus and only had maybe one towing incident per 100k Miles, dead batteries, flat tires, popped radiator from road debris...never had a trans or engine fail...and I drive them hard...

Keep up with maintenance (A&B Service, 25/50/75/100/etc... services) along with wearables and oil changes and you rarely have a breakdown, neglect it and it will fail....

I hear ya! My wife makes friends with the mechanic, plumber, electrician, trash man you name it. They must get along good because it never cost us anything. Boy I love that woman!

God I hope your kids look like you...does the dog bark when the UPS/Fed Ex Man comes around?

:jk:

My wife does the same thing....with the trades and being friendly that is....

Don't buy a Porsche 993.

Those things nearly hold more oil than gas!

Talking about car maintenance, I`ve noticed in my area the typical car you see on a flatbed tow truck is a BMW, Benz, Jaquar, Land Rovers. I wonder why?

They're going in for service. Send a rollback to pick up the car and redeliver it. Cheaper and easier than a loaner.

We have always had 1 German Car in our household...(2) VW (2) Audi, (1) Benz... when the warranty runs out my blood pressure goes up and the car gets sold soon after.....My wifes current VW has so many gadgets and options that it is just a rolling repair bill waiting to happen ... plus it takes $1500 tires and $750 brake pads ;?;? But she loves it

That's ridiculous - it cost me 40 bucks for brake pads for my lexus. and tires were done for 390 total... just don't hand it over to the stealership and you'll do way better than that.

GM:

Key on, engine off...push accelerator to the floor 3 times..resets oil change monitor.

Thanks, that took care of it.

How much extra does that cost?

kind of late now, but a bmw is generally gonna be 8-9 quarts and synthetic, once per year. It's not that bad.

Tires are 300+ a piece high performance - I don't go to dealership. A good buddy is a mechanic and I only pay for parts... The Dealer gets 1500 for breaks on Tourage

BMWs do take a special synth oil. I work at a dodge dealer and a hemi or srt synthetic is $60 for 7 quarts of mobil 1. And with a BMW id be for damn sure I use the right oil, not buying a long block from the junkyard for $500 for one. Germans are very weird with engineering, I would never compare them to anything else when it comes to cost.

Beemers require full synthetic oil, and you won't get a full sythetic oil change at the Jiffy Lube for a whole lot less than that....

meh.

Lexus "requires a full synthetic oil" too.

My car has been running fine for 70,000 miles on REGULAR oil.

That is ALL bullshit. Sorry.

Update us when the odometer rolls over to 270,000 miles. 70K is nothing today.

Not sure how your cars are relevant to what tires cost for my wife's truck.. Why would I give two shits and make. Something up?

BMW, takes a special reset tool.

As far as I know the oil light can be reset from the trip computer, but I have never done it myself. My cousin is a BMW master mechanic and I was sitting in the passenger seat when he reset my computer. It doesn't work for all BMWs as far as I know.

Press and hold the trip meter button and turn the ignition key to accessory position. Hold for 5 secs until you see "Reset" appear. Release and immediately press and hold again for another 5 secs until "Reset" flashes. Release and press again and the service counter should read a little over 15k miles.

I didn't read all the posts so maybe it has been mentioned. Was the car bought new? Still under warranty?? If so they come with free maintenance. My wife is on her 2nd BMW since 2008 and we have never paid for any maintenance. They even give her a BMW loaner car while they service our BMW.

That is correct. I reset mine after each oil change.
