Very cool, I'm a bit of an RC nut.
My guess is this will be a twin brushless electric and will hit speeds over 70 MPH. Keep us posted on the build.
Here are a couple of mine, both were bought as bare hull's. Built from a picture in my brain.
54" Fountain. Twin massive brushless motors running on 4 6s LiPo's and MHZ drives with custom made props. I can only get this beast to 60 MPH before it blows over. That's at 3/4 throttle.

31" Scarab Sport, the hull started out as an AeroMarine 31" Challenger. All custom made by me. Brushless motors in the outboards. This one does about 30 MPH.

What he said. I've often wanted to get into RC boats (or a float plane even), but there's no real suitable location to run them here.

I bet a rav4 could pull it. JK/ At 54 in that thing should be able to pull one heQQ of a trolling bait. I know its meant for speed but you gotta catch something on it just once.

You should really consider a BH Hanson motor for that boat. Check them out.

I am an R/C Boat nut as well , love the paint scheme, Good choice on the zenoah , check out www.bonzisports.com the have some modified engines there. Here are a few pics of mine- 70" expresscraft with a quickdraw 35" gas engine, top speed is 63mph and the other is a older dumas 46" hull with a stock air cooled 30cc homelite .

do you guys run these in Salt water?

I've gotta boat basin beside my house that is always slick calm, so I ran mine in there for test and tune. I'd let it float/run in the pool for awhile after each time in the saltwater and then heavily rinse it off with freshwater from a hose.

do you guys run these in Salt water?
Yes, both gas and electric. Just clean them very well after every run.
Awesome boats here, I built a few of these amazing gas R/C boats, and saved the molds. The technology in these new hulls is amazing with elec power! No mess. I would love to start making these hulls again. 48" Vee

Before you pull the trigger on the gas engine you should consider electric. Things have changed over the years. The gas Zenoah was once the only way to get speed out of these boats. These LiPo batteries and brushless motors are game changers. I can assure you a properly set up electric will blow a gas boat away.
Plus....they are quite, clean and simple to get going. I used to love my pro mod Zenoah in mt 50" Apache hull. The boat was a 50 MPH boat. Not bad but I was so tired of pulling on that starter cord. Plus they are so loud that it is tough to find places to run them without disturbing people.
Other benefits is having reverse! I can't tell you how many times I got my gas boats in a situation where I had to go after it. Having reverse would have prevented a lot of rescue missions.
Also, nice easy starts, however if you have a clutch on the gas engine like I did you can get that. I would never have a boat that needed to be thrown in the water to make it go.
Some examples...

Now thats fast!
Here is a good build thread with pictures and video. This one is a little extreme and the guy probably spent 3-4 grand on it but you can do it cheaper and get the same results. This was actually going to be my next RC boat build but I decided to put the money toward a real boat and bought my Marlin 35 instead.

No doubt it will scream, Redline makes a strong engine. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I think you and your son will get "the bug" and do another boat build. Do an electric on the next one. You will be able to see the difference. I love just plugging the battery in and going.
Are you getting a clutch on the engine or direct drive? Direct drive can be a pain in the ass. You need two people that know what they are doing.
With direct drive you have to start it on the stand (on land) and get it runnign quick and throw it in the water right away and get the boat moving at pretty high speed and keep it going it at high speed at all times so water is forced into the engine for cooling. Basically the boat needs to be hauling ass at all times.
With a clutch it becomes easier and more enjoyable. I used to stand in the water and put the boat in, then start it in the water. There is a water pump that will pump water into the engine for cooling while the boat is idling and not moving. This gives you time to let it warm up and adjust things if needed.
With a direct drive you make an adjustment, start it and throw it in. If you have water supply near by like your house you can rig a hose to the engine so you can start it and run it dry. But at the lake it's tough and that is where you end up making adjustments because the boat needs to run to load the motor.
The clutch is also great for teaching your son how to drive. This way you can let off the throttle and let it idle right in front of you. Letting off the throttle in a direct drive usually results in stalling out unless they have the idle set real high. In which case letting off the throttle means the boat only slows down to 15-20 MPH.
I'm sure you guys will have a blast with it either way. Be sure to post pics.
